Dante
’
s Peak Movie Questions
Disasters: Geology vs. Hollywood
Introduction
A volcanologist arrives at a countryside town recently named the second most desirable place to live in
America, and discovers that the long dormant volcano, Dante's Peak, may wake up at any moment

Learning Objectives
●
Critically assess the portrayal of science, forecasting, and eruptive behavior of Dante’s Peak in
the movie Dante’
s Peak (1997).
(4, b)
Part 1:
Watch the movie
As you are watching the video clips, look for the answers to the following questions
.
1.
In the opening scene of Dante’s Peak, Harry and his girlfriend are trying to escape during a
volcanic eruption. Visibility is poor because of falling volcanic ash. Do volcanoes really produce
ash? How can rocks burn/melt?
Volcanoes do produce ash, and it is sneakily one of the most dangerous things they can produce.
Volcanic ash is produced by explosive eruptions, which are the result of magma rising and
causing gasses to escape into the air.
2.
What volcanic hazard kills Harry’s girlfriend?
A large amount of cooled, clumped up lava hits Harry’s truck and kills her.
3.
When Harry, the mayor, and her kids visit Grandma’s cabin, there is foreshadowing of disaster.
List at least four signs (precursors) that Dante’s Peak is about to awaken.
Hot springs with boiling temperatures, dead trees, earthquakes, and dead animals.
4.
Describe anything you saw in these clips that you think might be scientifically questionable.
Maybe not scientifically questionable, but the fact that there were burned up bodies in the hot
springs seems implausible, as if they were in the hot springs and boiled to death in an instant with
no chance to get out.
5.
Explain Harry’
s
“proof” that Dante’s Peak is a “ticking time bomb?”
Due to all the anomalies and Harry’s method of tracking the seismic activity, he is able to
determine the severity of the situation.
6.
What caused the helicopter crash?
A mixture of volcanic ash and the visibility loss caused the helicopter to lose control.
EES 0836
7.
The film shows our hero et al. riding a boat that is rapidly dissolving in a lake made acidic by the
volcano. What part do you think is real, and where has Hollywood exaggerated to create drama?
While the lake very well could
’ve been made acidic, the speed at which the boat corrodes is
extremely unrealistic, as no metal could corrode that quickly
.
8.
The eruption melts the snow off the top of the mountain (volcano), which affects the surrounding
rivers.
It looks like muddy water flowed down Dante’s Peak, what is the scientific term for these
“flows?”
it is a Lahar.
9.
Harry dramatically drives through a lava flow. Do you think this is possible? Provide a couple
sentences to explain your reasoning.
it is practically impossible, as not only would the car not be able to withstand the heat, the tires
would undoubtedly pop right away as a result of the heat, and the metal frame would quickly
melt.
10.
In the end, did the order of volcanic hazards make sense? Does something not add up? What, if
anything, is out of place?
While the order could possibly happen in the same order it did in the film, the speed at which
everything occurred is unrealistic and meant for dramatization purposes.

On 3 Feb 2023, a train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio (4700
residents). Approximately 1.1 million pounds of vinyl chloride
CH2=CHCI, a toxic flammable gas, was released. Use Excel
to calculate the abundance of the M+2 species of vinyl
chloride. Note that there are multiple ways to add 2 extra
neutrons to the molecule. Paste your spreadsheet into your
answers. Use cntl+ (control+tilde key next to the number 1
key) to view all formulas and paste into answers too.
