Leadership Skills Strategic Thinking: According to an article on Center for Management & Organization Effectiveness strategic thinking is an intentional and rational thought process that focuses on the analysis of critical factors and variables that will influence the long-term success of a business, a team, or an individual. Based on the feedback from meeting with Eduardo improvement is needed in this area. While Eduardo is very smart, he moves very quickly when he decides on a solution without thinking of its affect or his team. Where strategic thinking in a team setting requires group input with calculated and reasonable solutions that affect the long-term success of the company. If he improves this skill his team will feel more welcome. Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence or EI is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and those of the people around you (By the Mind Tools Content Team, 2023). Based on the interview with Eduardo he doesn’t have a handle on his own emotions much less his teams. Once he gets a handle on his emotions and learns to work with his team improvement will be noticed quickly and turnover will stop. Communication Skills: Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring information from one place to another. It may be vocally (using voice), written (using printed or digital media such as books, magazines, websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language, gestures and the tone and pitch of voice). In practice, it is often a combination of several of these. Based on the interview on Eduardo’s work he is not communicating verbal at all with his team. And his non-verbal communication is coming off as very aggressive. This is causing internal stress. Without improvement it could be only a matter of time before those issues trickle out to customers. Actionable Steps One step that can improve Eduardo’s leadership skills can be attending informal and formal training offered in the areas of strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. Being very smart, I feel Eduardo would pick up the knowledge quickly from these classes and be able to implement it with his team. Another step Eduardo can take is participating in a coaching/mentoring program. He can obtain a mentor that has different skills then him to improve his skills. Additionally, he can start mentoring his own employees and build bonds with them that would allow him to share his knowledge and build relationships and improve his EI and communication skills with his mentees. All in all this will help reduce turnover for the company, reduce the adversarial relationships, and grow support from his team to achieve a greater vision and productivity for the team.
Flywheel Effect The flywheel effect is a concept that describes how small wins can accumulate over time, creating momentum that keeps the wheel spinning and leads to significant progress. To transform a leadership style using the flywheel effect, one should focus on performing the following tasks: o Creating direction and purpose: Develop a plan with SMART goals and ensure that the team understands the expectations. o Inspiring trust: Be consistent in actions and words to build trust, which is essential for the flywheel to function properly and gain momentum. o Driving the process: Organize resources to drive the process and ensure that everyone knows their role and responsibilities. o Building on accomplishments: Celebrate small wins and use them as a foundation to keep the flywheel going and continue to keep the team inspired and energized. o Executing with excellence: Follow through with each task and ensure that it is executed with excellence to measure progress and adapt plans as required. By performing these tasks, a Eduardo can promote gradual improvement that provides tangible evidence that the strategy is yielding results. The flywheel effect requires patience and persistence, but the results can be significant. As small wins accumulate, the momentum builds, and the flywheel begins to spin faster, leading to more significant progress over time (Collins, J., 2007). By focusing on these tasks, a leader can create a culture of continuous improvement that drives success and helps the team achieve its goals.
