2 Addressing Non-Compliance with PPE in the Manufacturing Plant As a newly hired HR specialist with a focus on health and safety, my initial tour of the manufacturing floor revealed widespread non-compliance with PPE usage. While the company evidently invests in top-of-the-line PPE, employees were seen wearing hearing protectors as necklaces, safety glasses on their heads, and lacking proper attire while handling hazardous materials. This scenario necessitates a multi-pronged approach to address this safety lapse and foster a culture of compliance within the organisation. Access The Situation and Training Needs Before implementing solutions, it's crucial for me to understand the underlying reasons behind employees' disregard for PPE. Here are some key factors to consider: 1) Lack of Knowledge:  Employees might not fully comprehend the risks associated with their tasks or the effectiveness of PPE in mitigating them. 2) Improper Fit:  Uncomfortable PPE can deter its use. Ill-fitting equipment can create irritation, restrict movement, or limit visibility. 3) Social Norms and Peer Pressure:  A workplace culture that downplays safety concerns might lead employees to believe using PPE is unnecessary. 4) Training Issues:  Inadequate training on proper PPE use and selection might leave employees confused or unaware of best practices. 5) Management Inconsistency:  If supervisors don't consistently enforce PPE usage, it sends a subconscious message that safety regulations are not crucial. Comprehensive Health and Safety Program To address these factors and promote PPE compliance, I will develop a comprehensive health and safety program to be implemented. This program will be grounded
3 in the Learning Theories I have studied in class (McShane, 2024). Here are the key tactics I will employ: 1) Formal Talks and Campaigns:  Organize regular safety talks, interactive workshops, and awareness campaigns to educate employees on the specific risks associated with their tasks and how PPE mitigates those risks. Utilize multimedia resources like videos, posters, and infographics to engage employees. 2) Informal Interaction:  Encourage open communication and conduct surveys to understand employee concerns and experiences regarding PPE. This information can be used to tailor training and address specific issues. 3) Rewards:  Consider implementing incentive programs that reward safe behaviour, such as consistent PPE usage. This can positively influence employee attitudes towards safety. 4) Plan and Implement Training Programs:  Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs that cover proper PPE selection, fitting, use, and maintenance for each specific job role. 5) Refresher Training:  Conduct regular refresher training to ensure ongoing knowledge retention and address any emerging safety concerns. 6) Positive Reinforcement and Coaching:  Focus on positive reinforcement and coaching to encourage safe behaviour rather than solely relying on disciplinary measures. 7) Regular Safety Inspections:  Conduct regular inspections of the workplace to identify potential hazards and ensure PPE is being used appropriately.

4 8) Evaluate Results of Training:  Monitor results related to safety incidents and PPE compliance. This data can be used to gauge the effectiveness of the safety program and identify areas for improvement. Conclusion By implementing a comprehensive program that addresses the root causes of non- compliance, promotes open communication, and prioritizes employee safety, we can cultivate a culture where PPE usage becomes a natural and ingrained practice. This will significantly reduce workplace injuries and improve overall employee well-being.
