Innovative Technology in Business
Introduction
For our research project, we have selected two large corporations. The first company chosen in this document is Amazon, founded by the now famous and very rich Jeff Bezos. He began his business selling books out of his garage and now has his hands in almost every industry, including space travel. The second and final company selected was Apple, another juggernaut corporation that is the leader in the tech industry. Apple also started small and caught some huge breaks being one of the first in the industry to market ground breaking technology that is still being built off of and moving the industry forward.

Introduction to Amazon
Amazon™ was Founded on July 5
th
1994 by Jeff Bezos in Bellevue, Washington but didn’t
go public until May 1997. Initially Amazon was an online market
place for books, but then expanded into a multitude of product
categories. Amazons growth started in 2017 after purchasing Whole
Foods Market Super market chain and is now the leading online
retailer in the world (Contibuters, n.d.).
I decided to choose Amazon as my research topic because it is quite a fascinating story about how one man with a dream and vision was able to build a company from just a small business in a garage to one of the most profitable companies in the world. His success has given small business entrepreneurs a platform to sell their goods, while at the same time being able to distribute them at a reasonable price all over the world (Contibuters, n.d.).

Technological Challenges and Innovation of
Amazon
Response to Covid-19 by Amazon
One of the many Technological Challenges faced by Amazon during the 2020 global pandemic was that the company was not prepared for such a huge demand for household staples & groceries because shoppers were not able to go into the physical stores. This high demand for basic necessities created a challenge in their operations network. Profits for the online retailer dropped 29% due to insufficient stock levels (Zakrzewski, 2020).
“My own time and thinking is now wholly focused on COVID-19 and on how Amazon can best play its role.”
(Bishop & Nickelsburg, 2020)
Innovations by Amazon
Since 2019 Amazon has introduced a vast amount of innovated tools and applications, one of which is “Sparrow”. Sparrow is a state of the art robotic system that streamlines the fulfillment process by moving products before they get packaged. This technological
advancement has given amazons employees the ability to move, handle, sort and identify products more efficiently. This is the first robotic system that can detect, select and handle millions of products in Amazons inventory (Staff, 2022). 5

Communication challenges face by Amazon
One of the online communication platforms Amazon utilizes is “The Message Center”.
1
This is a feature of Amazons ecommerce platform that allows customers to communicate with sellers about their orders. Message center options include:
They can ask questions
o
“What condition is the product in?”
Request updates
o
“Where is the product?”
Report issues related to their orders o
“This is not what I ordered”
Sellers use this platform to respond to
customers inquiries and resolve any
issues in the moment. It has been very
successful and useful because it is easy to
access and everything happens in real
time meaning everyone involved is
updated instantly with the most current
information available (Runyon, 2023).
1
I think this is a very useful method for combating communication issues and allowing users
to stay up to date with current information.

Technology Ethics Faced by Amazon
With Amazon now being the industry leader in the online market place, they are more subject to scrutiny from the public over ethics and they way they conduct their business. During the global pandemic, Amazon was experiencing backlash for intense working conditions. Many employees claimed to be working under strict conditions and long hours. In the last two years Amazon has invested in AI and robotic technology to assist and provide their employees with ethical working conditions, while at the same time keeping up with the growing demand for goods (Zakrzewski, 2020).

Innovative Technology in Business
Overview of Apple Based in Cupertino, California, Apple Inc ™, is a well-known American multinational technology company. Since its founding in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple has emerged as a leader in the design,
development, and marketing of consumer electronics,
software, and services on a worldwide scale. The company is
well-known for its devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac,
and Apple Watch, in addition its accommodative services and
software that includes iOS, macOS, and iCloud. (Wright, n.d.)
I chose Apple for my research because of its revolutionary approach to the development
and design of products, which has had a major influence on the technology industry. Research on Apple is interesting due to its focus on quality, technological innovation, and user experience. 8

Technological Challenges and Innovation of Apple
Response to Covid-19 by Apple
Apple encountered difficulties with supply chain interruptions, closing of retail locations,
and demands for remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Maintaining the integrity of the manufacturing and product development processes while following safety regulations and remote work agreements was a major technological challenge. "We are living in a time of great uncertainty and complexity. Our world is experiencing a profound challenge with the widespread coronavirus outbreak. As a result, we have taken
numerous actions to protect our team and make a significant
contribution to the global response to the pandemic." - Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. (Source: Apple Newsroom, "Tim Cook’s Message to Customers About COVID-19," March 13, 2020)
Innovations by Apple
Cook's recognition of the significant global challenge underscores the organization's dedication to accountability and adaptability amidst unpredictability and complexity. Apple's principles are exemplified by the emphasis placed on worker safety and the proactive steps made to support the international response. In navigating these 9

unprecedented times, this quote serves as a helpful reminder of the value of strong leadership and adaptability. It gives one hope that Apple will be able to overcome challenges and uphold its fundamental values of social responsibility and integrity.
Apple came up with creative ways to solve these problems.

Communication Challenges Faced by Apple
With research it appears as apple does face a lot of challenges with communication as apple effectively communicates with customers through a variety of digital communication platforms. Its official website, which acts as a focal point for product details, customer service, and online sales, is one noteworthy platform. Apple also uses social media to communicate with customers, share product updates, and improve its brand image on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. (Maxim, Apple challenges, n.d.)
Apple's online communication platforms are a success because of their simple user experience, appealing design, and smooth integration with their product line. Through the delivery of captivating content, prompt updates, and tailored experiences, Apple successfully draws in and holds on to customers through various digital platforms.

Technology Ethics at Apple Inc
Apple has shown its dedication to ethical conduct across several business operations, including technology use. One example of a moral choice made by the company's leadership is their stance on user privacy and data protection. Apple's products and services come with full encryption, open data collection policies, user consent mechanisms, and other stringent security measures. However, Apple has faced criticism
for its labor practices in overseas factories, particularly regarding the well-being and working conditions of its employees. The company has responded by implementing worker training programmers, supplier audits, and increased supply chain operations transparency. (consumer, n.d.)
Apple strives to maintain its guiding principles of honesty, accountability, and regard for
human rights. (cook, n.d.)

Conclusion
After researching both of these companies we have learned a lot of interesting things, both good and bad. Amazon has great reputation in the industry for selling anything to anyone with the means of purchasing it, while at the same time has had numerous reports of mistreating and sometimes over working their employees.
Apple is now a much more respectable business no longer operating in the sweat shops to produce products for cheaper and provides great working conditions and competitive wages. For that reason we have decided to work for apple as their company is trending in the right direction. For our second reason it would be nice to get a discount on future apple products, especially with the new release of the Apple Vision Pro.
