Introduction to Amazon Amazon™ was Founded on July 5 th 1994 by Jeff Bezos in Bellevue, Washington but didn’t go public until May 1997. Initially Amazon was an online market place for books, but then expanded into a multitude of product categories. Amazons growth started in 2017 after purchasing Whole Foods Market Super market chain and is now the leading online retailer in the world (Contibuters, n.d.). I decided to choose Amazon as my research topic because it is quite a fascinating story about how one man with a dream and vision was able to build a company from just a small business in a garage to one of the most profitable companies in the world. His success has given small business entrepreneurs a platform to sell their goods, while at the same time being able to distribute them at a reasonable price all over the world (Contibuters, n.d.). This high demand for basic necessities created a challenge in their operations network. Profits for the online retailer dropped 29% due to insufficient stock levels (Zakrzewski, 2020). “My own time and thinking is now wholly focused on COVID-19 and on how Amazon can best play its role.” (Bishop & Nickelsburg, 2020) Innovations by Amazon Since 2019 Amazon has introduced a vast amount of innovated tools and applications, one of which is “Sparrow”. Sparrow is a state of the art robotic system that streamlines the fulfillment process by moving products before they get packaged. This technological advancement has given amazons employees the ability to move, handle, sort and identify products more efficiently. This is the first robotic system that can detect, select and handle millions of products in Amazons inventory (Staff, 2022).
F IGURE 3: A MAZON M ESSAGE C ENTER Source: https://www.sellerapp.com/amazon-message-center.html Communication challenges face by Amazon One of the online communication platforms Amazon utilizes is “The Message Center”. 1 This is a feature of Amazons ecommerce platform that allows customers to communicate with sellers about their orders. Message center options include: They can ask questions o “What condition is the product in?” Request updates o “Where is the product?” Report issues related to their orders o “This is not what I ordered” Sellers use this platform to respond to customers inquiries and resolve any issues in the moment. It has been very successful and useful because it is easy to access and everything happens in real time meaning everyone involved is updated instantly with the most current information available (Runyon, 2023). 1 I think this is a very useful method for combating communication issues and allowing users to stay up to date with current information.

During the global pandemic, Amazon was experiencing backlash for intense working conditions. Many employees claimed to be working under strict conditions and long hours. In the last two years Amazon has invested in AI and robotic technology to assist and provide their employees with ethical working conditions, while at the same time keeping up with the growing demand for goods (Zakrzewski, 2020). Table 1: Amazon Commitments Amazons Key Commitments 1 Emissions Zero emission energy sources by 2023 2. Electric Vehicles $700 million investment into 100k electric vehicles by 2024 2. Climate and Social Causes $1 billion sustainable bond for the climate and social causes
