Christopher Sperry Dr. Nicholson B A 350-Section 1 15 June 2023 Paper 2: Motivation of Employees “All beings begin their lives with hopes and aspirations” (Zahn, 2017). The same can be said for businesses as well. Whether the hope is for everything to turn out alright, or the aspiration of becoming financially sound. However, the path towards these goals is seldom straight forward. It is therefore the goal of management to understand, motivate, and inspire there coworkers and employees to strive toward those goals or have the company itself strive to help their employees achieve their goals. To understand one’s employees, a person in a management-based position needs to understand the minds and goals of their employees. Thus, when hiring an employee, it is often best to determine the personality and values of the one being hired. According to Lecture 5: Personality and Values, the most common means of measuring a personality is with self-report surveys. Self-report surveys are used in a variety of ways from pre-clinical interviews to employee self-assessment reports. Some of these reports can give insight to what a person is seeking. Whether that person is seeking to make more money, gain certain medical attention, or something else, the reports at the very least will tell what a person desires. However, “[t]he accuracy, reliability, and validity of […]self-reports are mixed, suggesting that one should be cautious when using the self-report method and, when possible, utilize multiple methods”
(Edelstein, 2005). Another way to evaluate if a person would be a good fit as an employee is through multiple interviews that test the person’s fit for the company. Based on John Holland’s personality-job fit theory, which is shown in Figure 1: Holland’s Typology from Lecture 5, shows that personality can affect what type of job a person is best suited for. Figure 1: Holland’s Typology By basing the level of satisfaction and the partiality of leaving a job can depend on the degree to which an individual matches their personality to there occupation (Nicholson, Lecture 5’s date ). It is therefore that during an interview, the interviewee is being tested by the interviewer for a personality that would best suit a work environment. As a manager, it is easier to motivate people with similar mind sets. Although the degree of motivation required may vary, there are multiple ways to motivate one’s employees based on three key elements: Intensity, Direction, and Persistence (Lecture 7). The Home Depot utilizes these elements to promote an environment of safety at there warehouses utilizing a milestone calendar, which will inform employees how they will celebrate certain milestones of the store being safe. There are also motivational factors for signing people of for store credit at the home
depot, as head cashiers and managers would recognize cashiers for the amount of people they are able to sign up by either giving them a patch or writing a letter of recognition . These were not the only ways to receive such items of praise, as others would go above and beyond in helping others, or even help create a solution for angry, upset, or disturbed customers. However, most of these items are geared towards a store-based environment. The field I tend to go into has a lot more to offer. In the field of construction, professionals are often motivated to go to work through self- determination . According to Lecture 7, the self determination theory states that “[p]eople prefer to feel they have control over their actions” and “focus on the beneficial effects of intrinsic motivation and harmful effects of extrinsic motivation” (Lecture 7). Although it is likely that utilizing some of the ideas from Home Depot could work in the construction field, there are many other factors that can work as well. One of which is pay bonuses for working safe, finishing a job quicker than anticipated, and under budget. By offering pay bonuses, many workers are more than willing to show up to work and complete there tasks with the company’s goals in mind as well. Bringing on the topic of goals is another motivational factor in a job-based setting as well. A goal sets a time frame as well as informs employees what needs to be done. A great example of this in construction is when pouring a concrete foundation, as the foundation needs to be done correctly and quickly, to have a strong base for a building to lie upon. It is common that once a large task like laying the foundation is completed that construction teams would celebrate their achievements in various ways, whether it is going out to grab food and drinks together or simply throwing a party. By celebrating such achievements, management can show that they care just as much as the workers pouring the concrete, and in turn promote a work-life balance.

By promoting a balance between life and work, employers can benefit from their employees. This is because “[p]roductivity is higher, absenteeism is lower, and physical and mental health improves with a higher commitment and motivation to work” (Dr. Liji Thomas, 2021). In the end, there are many ways to motivate an employee, but only a few ways to pick them. By being able to have them fill a self-report about themselves such as an application to apply and/or a resume along with interviewing the potential employee, one is able to pick up what can motivate them better. In some circumstances, it is the motivation of company parties, for others it is monetary items such as patches or money. As long as the worker is happy, the company will prosper.
