1-3 Assignment: Triple Bottom Line Industry Comparison SNHU October 29 th , 2023 Deanna Willis
Triple Bottom Line (TBL) is the belief that businesses should commit to focus on social and environmental concerns like they do with revenue. We will discuss the similarities in TBL framework between service industry and manufacturing industry. Both industries can benefit from using the B impact assessment to asses the companies TBL value. The B impact assessment is used to measure categories like employees, environment, and community. The service industry and manufacturing industry have social responsibilities and while using TBL the value could influence the company’s public reputation. Now we will discuss the difference between TBL framework with service industry and Manufacturing industry. Service industry is “ inputs are primarily employees. Their time, effort, expertise, judgement, and care in meeting the needs of others professionally and effectively work toward the output of outstanding customer service” ( Soomo Learning. (2020). People, planet, and profit- CH. 1.8- PAR.8). Manufactures industry typically scores above service industry on categories like environmental and governance. And scores lower than service industry on categories like lower in community and employees. One of the reasons manufacture scores lower in employee category is because service industry utilizes employees to provide service while manufacture industry produces products using materials. Manufacturer scores higher in environmental and governance because the environment can be impacted as a result of production. “.. this is primarily about taking materials in at one loading dock, turning them into something else in the building, and sending finished goods out the other end. The inputs and outputs are physical goods, and the operations are about manufacturing efficiently” ( Soomo Learning. (2020). People, planet, and profit- CH. 1.8- PAR.7). The service industry does not produce products so they do not have to follow the laws around manufacturing. So, because of that the employees have vested interest into the service industry because they feel a purpose.
Ethical decision-making model is appropriate to use across both the service and the manufacturing industries because they would consider people, planet and profit through the triple bottom line guidelines. Both industries would have the opportunity to see results of their actions in terms of the environment, community and employees. A service-based industry would have the ability to lower waste throughout the business. Solutions would include composting, recycling and using the items. This will show the public that this business supports environmentally change. And manufacturing industry will set higher expectation of the employees to interact with the community. This will raise employee satisfaction and attract more customers. Both of the industries should consider donating and volunteering to support the community to show their gratitude.
