BUS -210 MANAGING AND LEADERSHIP MODULE 4-3 JOURNLS JEAN MARIE KAGABO PROFF: MATT KEOGH February 04, 2024 I have only worked for one organization so far in my career, and it is a Transportation career. When I first started, I put my truck in Capital Express trucking company. They were charging me 20% on each load they provide. I was responsible for fuel insurance, maintenance, and breakdowns. I could not make any income because when they dispatch, they do not care if the load would pay good because they were just looking for 30%. To them befit or not their 30% is there. I was just making little money After one I diced lease another truck and hired another driver to operate together, business went very well, but as time went on the organizational culture went downhill. The last three or four years have been an even more decline due to the manager. I will be talking about those past few years. The manager he became more and more dangerous on company, and everything became worse, so that really affected the company culture and records point dropped. This manager caused the Most owner operators to quit. Drivers didn’t want to show up to work but felt like they were stuck so didn’t make any moves to get out of there. I finally stepped up and have created my owner MC and I started to move on my own. To describe the organizational culture very broadly to start, I would say it is very toxic. The vision of the organization is to extend delivery and grow my income, and the mission was using different avenues of media to spread that message. Over the past three or four
years the vision had become blurred, and it seemed the priorities were only about trying to bring in money. Unfortunately, that is all too common for a lot of tucking companies these days. What the dispatch manager would say during services and how he would act, was very different from how he spoke and acted every day toward to driver. Although this is the only organization I have ever driven for, I can see how the culture of the workplace is so important and can play a big impact on the fulfillment of the vision and mission. “...just as having the “right” culture may be a competitive advantage for an organization, having the “wrong” culture may lead to performance difficulties, may be responsible for organizational failure, and may act as a barrier preventing the company from changing and taking risks.” (Soomo Learning,) I can confidently say that this organization had a “wrong” culture because we weren’t doing things to accomplish the vision, and when the leader became very self-centered, the employees had no incentive to try and pursue the vision. One specific example that affected the culture is when the organization received a very large numbers of drivers generating company income. There are so many things that could have been with that increase compliance and make drivers happy to keep them. We could have a great load board like Selectas to be able to get enough and pay good loads; drivers could have generated a great income and must reduce charges on driver. Instead, the leader bought a new rule for that every driver must pay Tolls, hotels himself, and contribute for morning coffee. This was very disheartening for all the company’s drivers and owner operators, and really had a detrimental effect on the organizational culture. The leader didn’t consult anybody about this decision, he just decided to purchase the car on his own. But because of the authoritarian leadership style that he has, everyone was afraid to speak up and say something. The culture was just a mess. If the mission and vision of the organization is to make delivery to company’s
customers and generate income, then these kinds of decisions absolutely do not align with the culture that should be at this kind of organization because they are based on greed and selfish and not drivers and owner operators to glow. My leadership style is a participative leader, and I believe that style of leadership could work very well to turn the organizational culture around in a positive way. I would have a team of dispatches to run all decisions by, and very much encourage participation from all including drivers. I am seen as very responsible and reliable, so I would handle more responsibly. Having the team to run things by would also hold me accountable as a leader, to make sure every decision that is made aligns with the mission and vision. One of my personality traits is being confident, and I am always wanting to help other people. That trait along with being communicative would make me a very strong leader in the type of organizational culture that I have described. Overall, I have not had a great experience with this organization and its culture, but my traits, skills and leadership style could have a very positive impact on this culture, and any organization’s culture that I work for in the future.
