1 Government Role in Consumer Behavior Billie Truong School of Business, Technology, and Health Care Administration, Capella University BUS4024 January 19, 2024
2 Introduction At both the national and local levels, the government plays a pivotal role in the production and disposal of materials. They also control how materials are consumed or are used. One particular aspect that the government should continue to monitor is waste management. It is critical for the government to establish policies that are responsibly practical for the environment. Implementing strict protocols will protect the communities who face challenges of environmental sustainability. Other practices that the government have also been making is the promotion of recycling, managing waste efficiently, and educating others on the importance of reducing their ecological footprint. Waste Management In my local community, I think it is agreeable that the government should strongly address waste management. Proper waste disposal and recycling practices are critical for the environment. Both local and national level government officials should actively work on finding new ways to implement and enforce policies that encourage waste management. Prioritizing this on the agenda would promote a cleaner and safer environment. The government can create efficient recycling programs, educate the public on the importance of waste reduction, and monitoring waste disposal
3 facilities to ensure that they are following safety protocols. In addition, the government could also offer incentives to individuals and businesses who adopt eco-friendly practices and technology that minimizes waste. By addressing waste management efficiently, our communities will have a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future. Consumer’s Role Consumers have significant influence over waste management through their choices and behaviors. The choices that an individual makes in their daily lives, such as purchasing decisions and consumption habits, have a direct impact on how waste is generated. When an individual has to decide on which products to select, they should opt for a product with eco-friendly sustainable packaging options. This will alleviate the volume of overall waste. Consumers should also consider extending the lifespan of their belongings, rather than discarding them prematurely. To extend the lifespan, the individual can repair the item and use it to its fullest potential. This avoids overconsumption and also supports the culture of longevity. (Ngida, 2023). Proper recycling alleviates the burden on landfills by separate the recyclables from non-recyclables. By adopting these habits, the consumers are taking proactive measures that contribute to sustainable waste management and environmental preservation. Government’s Role

4 The government currently controls waste management at various levels: locally, regionally, and nationally. Their direct involvement in waste management extends across different aspects, which include regulation, infrastructure development, public education, and enforcement. Governments enact laws and regulations that set the standard for waste disposal, recycling, and environmental protection. Some of these regulations address specific waste challenges such as reducing plastic, promoting recycling, encouraging sustainable practices. (US Department of State, 2022). The governments are also responsible for establishing waste collections and disposal infrastructure, which includes landfills, recycling centers, and composting facilities. New technologies are being invested currently to improve efficiency. Whether the government should take a more active or less active role depends on several factors. It depends on the specific needs within a community, how effective the current existing policies are, and the level of awareness the public has. A more active government role ensures environmental protection measures. A less active role may encourage individual responsibility. In my personal opinion, an active government will be beneficial to maintain order and regulations.
