Dimensional Analysis Project Purpose: Measurement is the most common use of numbers in our everyday lives. In your assigned module readings, you have seen a variety of units in English system, more commonly used in the United States, and the Metric system used by the rest of the world. When gathering information, it is often necessary to convert between units in order to interpret the information. The purpose of this assignment is to practice this skill by planning a road trip. Assignment Goal : Convert units for physical quantities measuring length, weight, capacity, currency, and temperature. Instructions: For this project, you are to plan a hypothetical road trip. The trip should be within the continental United States; a destination within 500 miles that you can drive to from your current location. You must show all work and demonstrate the dimensional analysis in order to receive full credit . Part A - Questions 1-4 The Drive The Drive Starting city and state and trip destination city and state: Cadillac, Michigan to Sandusky, Ohio Find the round-trip distance in miles: Round trip 624 miles What resource did you use to determine trip distance? Google Maps Convert the round-trip distance from miles to kilometers. Round to the nearest kilometer. (You must show work for full credit) 624 ?𝑖?𝑒? ∗ 1.60934?? 1 ?𝑖?𝑒 = 1, 004. 23?? What is the gas mileage of your car in miles per gallon? How do you know this? 21mpg I looked it up on Kelly Bluebook How many gallons of gas will you need for the trip? (You must show work for full credit) 624?𝑖?𝑒? ÷ 21??𝑔 = 29. 71𝑔?? ≈ 30𝑔?? Using the national average price per gallon of gas, calculate how much money you will need to spend on gas for the trip. (For current gas prices, use AAA Gas Prices ) (You must show work for full credit) $3. 67/𝑔?? ∗ 30 𝑔?? = $110. 10 Convert the total number of gallons of gas to liters of gas. Round to the nearest liter. (You must show work for full credit) 30𝑔?? ∗ 3.78541𝐿 1𝑔?? = 113. 562𝐿
For parts (i) & (j), assume that your average speed is 40 mph. This average takes into consideration city and highway speeds. Convert the average speed from miles per hour to kilometers per hour. (You must show work for full credit) 40??ℎ ∗ 1.609??ℎ 1??ℎ = 64. 374??ℎ How long will the round trip take in hours? Round to one decimal place. (You must show work for full credit) 624?𝑖?𝑒? ÷ 40??ℎ = 15. 6 ℎ?𝑢?? The Weather—In order to pack appropriately for the trip, you should consider the weather at your trip destination. The Weather What is the current typical temperature at your current location? Temp is 59ºF. Convert to Celsius: (You must show work for full credit) 32ºF=0ºC (59º𝐹 − 32) ∗ 5 9 = 15º𝐶 What is the current typical temperature at your trip destination? Temp is 66ºF. Convert to Celsius: (You must show work for full credit) 32ºF=0ºC (66º𝐹 − 32) ∗ 5 9 = 18. 889º𝐶 Someone will be taking care of your dog while you are gone. If you do not have a dog, suppose that you just got a puppy. Veterinarians recommend that dogs who weigh 30 pounds should eat 14 ounces of dog food per day. Dog/Puppy What is the weight of your dog (or new puppy) in pounds? 60??? How many days do you plan to be gone on your trip? 2 What is the minimum amount of dog food, in pounds, that you must leave for the puppy sitter so that there will be enough food for the dog through the entire time that you are gone? Round your answer up to the nearest pound. (You must show work for full credit) 14 2 = 28 ?𝑧 60?? ∗ 16?𝑧 1?? = 1. 75?? ≈ 2?? Suppose that you were taking a trip of the same distance in another country--either Netherlands, Germany, Egypt, Japan, or South Africa. Country Average price of a gallon of Gas (in US Dollars) Exchange Rate: $1 = Name of Currency Netherlands $6.48 0.82446 Euro
Germany $5.57 0.82446 Euro Egypt $0.65 15.63876 Egyptian Pound Japan $4.24 104.66808 Yen South Africa $2.62 14.70627 Rand Country Travel State the country you chose and the name of that country’s currency: Germany and they use Euros Find the average price (in dollars) of a gallon of gas in that country. $5.57 Using the table above, what is the exchange rate in that country? $1 USD = 0.82446 Local Currency How much would the gas for this trip cost if you were traveling in that country? (You must show work for full credit) $5. 57/𝑔?? ∗ 30𝑔?? = $167. 10 How much would the gas for this trip cost in the foreign currency of the country you chose? (You must show work for full credit) 0. 82446 𝑒𝑢??? 30𝑔?? = 24. 73 𝑒𝑢??? Part B Written Response Think about your hypothetical trip within the United States. A major trip involves additional costs other than gas. Type a short response to the questions below. Enter your response after the bullet point. Discuss how many days you will spend at your destination. Why? Does this include the days to travel to and from the destination? I plan to spend 2 days in Sandusky, OH and that includes traveling to and from Cadillac, MI. Discuss at least two other specific travel-related expenses (besides gas) and how each of these expenses might impact the total cost of the trip. When traveling long distances you get hungry so you need to eat. You decide to spend money on fast food and for four people it costs about $50. If you decide you want a souvenir for the memories that can cost anywhere from $10-50 depending on what you get. Discuss how much money you should budget for the time you are at your destination. How much will you budget for travel days? How did you come up with these amounts? I think that for my two day trip we should budget around $500 for travel and at the destination I’d say $100 is plenty enough for gifts and souvenirs. I just rounded up the cost of gas to be $240 which saves you money to get food on the road and any other travel mispaps like a flat tire or needing a tow and I just think that you should’t bring more than $100 to spend on gifts or souvenirs.
