Leadership & Professional Development Paper William Haymaker Intro to Public Administration PAUD*305-E1WW Professor Christopher Lee September 23, 2023
As a Captain in the Ohio State Highway Patrol, I have already achieved significant milestones in my career. However, it's essential to set clear professional goals for the next six years to finish my current role strong, prepare for retirement, and explore opportunities in owning my own business. This paper outlines these three professional goals and provides a comprehensive plan with five essential steps to achieve them within a six-year timeline. It also explains my current leadership style that is important to me in accomplishing my future goals. My main goal is to finish my career on a high note by becoming the best person and leader I can be. Currently, I hold a senior leadership role where I am dedicated to continuously improving my leadership and management skills. To achieve this, I will regularly participate in leadership workshops, seminars, and training programs to stay updated on the latest industry trends and advanced leadership techniques. I oversee a group of more than 220 employees, and it's crucial to me that we maintain a strong team and a positive work environment. I achieve this by offering guidance and mentorship to everyone on my team, from our top-ranking commanders and post sergeants to the hardworking troopers and dispatchers on the front lines. My ultimate goal is to foster teamwork, create a family-like atmosphere, and provide opportunities for each team member to grow professionally. I am committed to giving these emerging leaders chances for growth and leadership roles. Additionally, I am determined to create a smooth transition plan for my successor to ensure that our organization's success continues without interruption. My next goal is to retire from my current job in six years. To get ready for retirement, it's crucial that I keep making wise financial decisions and ensure I have enough money for a comfortable retirement. This involves getting advice from a financial advisor to create a detailed retirement plan. I need to assess my current financial situation, set specific savings goals, and
make informed choices about where to invest my money to protect my financial security in the future. My third objective is to become the owner of my own business in the field of youth sports management. To achieve this, I need to create a thorough business plan that encompasses a detailed business model, financial forecasts, marketing tactics, and a well-defined mission and vision statement. My efforts will also involve establishing a customer base and generating interest from local communities in various youth sports programs. Five Steps 1. Continuous Self-Improvement (Throughout) a. Dedicate time to enhancing personal and leadership skills. b. Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment. c. Ensure a smooth transfer of leadership responsibilities. 2. Retirement Savings Goals (Year 2) a. Establish specific retirement savings goals based on the financial assessment. b. Determine the required funds for a comfortable retirement. c. Consult with a financial advisor to evaluate current financial status. 3. Investment Strategy (Year 3) a. Develop an investment strategy in collaboration with a financial advisor, aligning with retirement objectives. b. Diversify investments for long-term financial growth. 4. Business Planning for Youth Sports Management (Year 5)

a. Formulate a comprehensive business plan featuring a detailed business model, financial projections, marketing strategies, and a clear mission and vision statement. 5. Marketing and Community Engagement (Years 6) a. Develop a strategic marketing plan to attract interest from local communities in youth sports programs. b. Influence both online and offline channels for effective promotion. c. Concentrate on building a strong customer base by delivering high-quality youth sports management services. My current leadership style is transformational leadership, a method that I firmly believe in and will consistently use to achieve my career objectives, as outlined earlier. The utilization of this particular leadership style is not merely a preference but a strategic necessity for several compelling reasons. Transformational leaders understand and support the needs of followers, work with them to define and seek higher-level needs, and engage followers as whole people. “The result of transformational leadership is a relationship of mutual stimulation and elevation that converts followers into leaders and may convert leaders into moral agents” (Burns, 1978, p. 4). In fact, leadership in the public sector involves attention not only to the needs and values of those within the organization, but also to the values and preferences of citizens” Denhardt, J. V., & Blanc, T. A. (2013). Through this approach, I aim to inspire my team members to reach their full potential, fostering an environment where they are motivated to excel. By motivating and challenging my team to perform at their best, I can ensure that our collective efforts are aligned with the
overarching goals of the organization. It encourages creative thinking and the exploration of new solutions to complex problems including my goals of retiring in six years and starting my own business venture. A strong statement of any leadership style, Perhaps most importantly, leadership is not just about doing things right, but also about doing the right things” (Bennis & Nanus, 1985). Becoming the Best Leader: Some examples of how Transformational leadership will help me inspire my team members to reach their full potential would be through open communication, giving a chance for personnel to give feedback, as I engage my team in conversation This will foster a shared vision of excellence. Another example would be to encourage creative thinking and innovative problem-solving, leading by example in staying ahead of other districts throughout the state. This culture of continuous improvement equips my team to support organizational goals effectively. Preparing for Retirement and Starting a Business: As I approach retirement in six years and consider my entrepreneurial venture, transformational leadership is vital. An example of how I will use this in my future role, is to use this style to empower a self-sufficient team. Transformational leadership would be used to encourage self-motivation as my future team handles responsibilities seamlessly during the startup of the business. In conclusion, this paper outlines three major career goals: concluding my career successfully, preparing for retirement, and launching a youth sports management business within six years. These goals signify my commitment to growth, financial readiness, and entrepreneurship.
