Report
4-1: Report Emilee Krenzien MBA-699: Strategic Opportunity Management Dr. Dale Deardorff Southern New Hampshire University February 9, 2024
1 4-1: Report 1. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code: The NAICS code that best relates to this organization is 541714 - Research and Development in Biotechnology (except Nanobiotechnology). This code encompasses the life science sector as well as pharmaceutical/medicinal research. While it excludes nanotechnology, the company can create a separate code to include nanotechnology when necessary. To find top competitors, we can analyze top sellers using the same code and further research which of those companies are working on similar projects. In addition to the code listed above, I would also assign the SIC code 8731. SIC 8731 is code for commercial physical and biological research. 2. Top competitors: Three of our company's top competitors are Twist Bioscience, Medpace Inc., and Arcus Biosciences. These three companies are part of the top sellers under the same NAICS code as our organization. The three criteria I have used to create a shortlist of competitors would be to ensure they are doing medical research, similarly structured organizations as far as size and lab operation, and targeting the same or similar audiences. The criteria that was used to narrow down a list of 3 companies that would be our companies largest competitors would be helpful criteria for finding potential buyers as well. Our largest competition could easily become a potential buyer, if analyzed correctly. A company marketing the same family of product to the same audience would be intrigued by a company that has already conducted the research needed to formulate an effective oncology medicine. The time and resources the potential buying company would save from not having to conduct research would open the potential for competition to become a buyer.
2 The criteria for shortlisting our competitor list was chosen to identify the companies that would most likely be working with similar projects for the same market. For the companies to be similar, they would both have to be performing medical research. I chose to look for companies that were of similar operations because other organizations with internal lab research are closely related to our own. This makes it easier to compare data between the two companies without having to account for a third party research lab. Lastly, I chose the third criteria for the shortlist to be companies that have the same target market. It is important to analyze companies that have similar target markets because those are the companies that are our organizations' most direct competition. These companies will be offering other solutions for the same problem. Once information has been acquired about their solutions they are offering, our organization will be able to highlight why our medication is better suited for the needs of the market. Other criteria that were considered, but not included, are number of employees working for the company, whether the company is public or private, and years in business. While these criteria would have narrowed the competitors to companies that were even more similar to our own organization, these factors were not the most important for determining the level of competition the other companies pose. 3. Company information: Of the three companies listed, the one most similar to our company is Arcus Biosciences. This company is doing research for oncology medication and targeting the same audience as our company. Identifying this company is important for our organization because they are also the company that would be the most likely to become a buyer over the other companies selected based on the research and product they are also researching. Below is a table of the three companies identified as our top competitors and what they bring to the table.
