BUS 2202 - E-Commerce Week 7 Discussion Buck, Timothy Lessons Learned from Public Disclosure of Private Facts: Implications for the E- Business Community The emergence of the digital era has presented novel obstacles to safeguarding the privacy of individuals. The revelation of personal information to the public can result in significant repercussions, causing detrimental effects and physical harm to individuals. The objective of this discourse is to examine two instances wherein individuals sustained injuries due to disseminating their confidential data to the public. Through an analysis of the shared characteristics among these instances, valuable insights can be gleaned for the e-commerce industry regarding safeguarding confidentiality in the virtual domain. Example 1: Online Harassment and Cyberbullying One example of injury caused by the public disclosure of private facts is online harassment and cyberbullying. In such instances, confidential data, such as intimate images or delicate particulars, is intentionally propagated through online channels. The previously stated influences possess the ability to generate immense mental anguish, defamation of one’s character, and, occasionally, corporeal damage to those impacted. Corresponding with a 2017 analysis executed by the Pew Research Center, 41% of inhabitants in America have encountered web-based torment, which has culminated in adverse cerebral consequences such as restlessness, despondency, and self-mutilation in dangerous instances (Duggan, 2017). Example 2: Revenge Porn Revenge porn is another unfortunate consequence of the public disclosure of private facts. It involves disseminating intimate or explicit images or videos without the individual's consent. That behavior disregards the independence and discretion of those affected, resulting in significant psychological anguish, public disgrace, and damage to intimate and work connections. Based on a Cyber Civil Rights Initiative poll, 93% of casualties conveyed severe emotional suffering, and 49% faced
vocational or scholastic repercussions due to revenge pornography (Eaton et al., 2017). Commonalities and Lessons Learned: These examples share several commonalities, highlighting the key lessons that the e-business community should consider: Privacy Protection: Both examples emphasize the critical importance of robust privacy protection measures. The absolute necessity of careful data-guarding procedures, unbreakable information-keeping techniques, and code-making methods must be the top priority for online business organizations. This is to guarantee the defense of customers' private details. Adherence to applicable secrecy rules and requirements, for instance, the General Information Shield Regulation in the European Coalition, falls within this range (Weller & Watteler, 2021). Consent and Control: Respecting individuals' consent and control over their personal information is crucial. E-commerce enterprises must secure unambiguous consent before gathering, using, or sharing personal details of those individuals from whom the information originates. In addition, users must be afforded the agency to manage their privacy preferences, determine the scope of data dissemination, and readily withdraw from any data exchange protocols. Education and Awareness: Promoting digital literacy and awareness is essential to protect individuals from the harmful consequences of public disclosure. E-businesses can play a role in educating their users about safe online practices, privacy settings, and potential risks associated with sharing personal information. This can be done through user- friendly guides, educational campaigns, and proactive user communication (Bandura & Méndez Leal, 2022). Content Moderation and Reporting Mechanisms:
E-businesses must establish effective content moderation systems to prevent the dissemination of private information without consent. In addition, implementing robust reporting mechanisms and swift response procedures can help address incidents promptly, protect victims, and deter potential offenders ("Combatting Online Harms through Innovation Federal Trade Commission I Report to Congress," 2022). The examples of online harassment and revenge porn illustrate the significant harm caused by the public disclosure of private facts. Therefore, the e- commerce industry should be highly vigilant to meticulously safeguard customers' privacy by upholding it as an issue of the utmost importance. E-commerce entities can establish a more secure and reliable online milieu by giving precedence to safeguarding privacy, procuring consent, fostering education and awareness, and instituting content moderation and reporting mechanisms.
