Hello class and Dr. B, I chose to discuss about epigenetics: I believe that epigenetics shows a new perspective on nature vs. nurture due to the reliable data shown in the studies involving rodents. Although that we can see that genetics like the mice who had the Agouti mutation can be passed down to offspring, Champagne and Mashoodh (2009) stated that when the mice changed their diet the gene for their offspring changed and it was not passed down. So, we can see that even though nature was designed to pass the gene mutation down, the nurture/environment that the female mouse provided gave the opportunity for the gene to not be passed down. Champagne and Mashoodh (2009) explain low levels of mother care during infancy are linked to increased methylation of the estrogen receptor promoter, lower receptor expression, and decreased adult maternal behavior in these offspring. We often see people who are diagnosed with mental health issues that they often suffered not enough parental care when they were children. I believe the social implications of this study are that even though we can often be predisposed to genes being passed down, often those genes can change due to the environment we are surrounded by when we are developing. Finally I predict that further research when looking at gene x environment could be the risks of any major mental health issue. Like we can now see predictable cancer genes I feel like these research studies can help influence being able to see what mental health genes we could be predisposed to and how nurture could possibly change those outcomes.
