For this anticipatory set I will use the science standard, 2-PS1-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify diverse kinds of materials by their observable properties (Iowa Dep. Of Ed., 2023). For this standard I would use various objects such as cotton balls, screws, pipe cleaners, felt, paper, wood, sandpaper, and different stones. Students would compare different items and group them together to be classified by how easily they bend, how rough or smooth they are, and how hard or soft they are. To set up the anticipatory set I would divide these items and place them in three different stations. I would also like to have a clipboard and lab coat of some kind at each child’s desk. I feel this would help the students get excited about the lesson and make them feel like real scientists. When the students arrived in the classroom I would be holding my own clipboard and wearing a lab coat. To adjust this to an online learning class I would dress in the lab coat with a clipboard and begin the lesson by having students find random objects around their home. It would also be helpful to send an email to parents ahead of time explaining the lesson so they could help students find objects that closely relate to what I would use in the classroom lesson. I think it would also be helpful for the students to be able to share the worksheets with each other through a discussion board to compare different items. Since they will be doing it from home it would be beneficial for the students to see a large variety of items and how each student classified them. Some questions that I would find helpful to be answered. 1. Are there any suggestions on items that would better fit this lesson especially for an online version that would be affordable and easily accessed? 2. Do you feel the lab coats would be an affordable option? If not are there any suggestions on something else I could include as an attention grabber? 3. Should I not divide materials into three tables and instead have them all together to avoid misuse of items? Or would it be better to have enough items so each small group could have their own set? 4. Any suggestions that would improve this lesson?
