Case Study #2: Immunity Many years ago, there was a famous case of a boy born with severe combined immune deficiency (SCID). His physicians placed him in a pathogen-free chamber that resembled a giant glass bubble. What purpose was served by doing this? What treatments are available today that might have helped this boy? Student Answer: The boy’s physician placed him in a pathogen-free chamber because of his weak immune system. This decision made sure that he would not be harmed by different germs and bacteria in the environment. To this day, bone marrow transplants are the only known and successful treatment.
