Karina Guzman ADJU: 50 Lab # 5: Exemplar Signatures 1. Examine the high point and low point lines that you drew with the ruler across the top and bottom of each exemplar and forged signature. Describe two similarities and two noticeable differences between them? One similarity in the first signature is the slant on the letter H and a second similarity is the slant in the letter E. Two differences in the first signature are the slants on both the letter L. They do not match the original signature. Two similarities in the second signature are all the high and low points of the first name John match. Two differences in the second signature are the high and low points lines on the letters U and R in Burke. Two similarities in the third signature are all the high and low point lines in the last name Adams. Two differences are the high and low points in letters C and L in Charles. 2. Did you forge every signature in one motion or did you stop while signing? Discuss all three signatures. With signature number one I frequently stopped while signing it. It is apparent that some lines on some letters are not as smooth as others. With signature number two I believe that I did a lot better than number one because some parts of the name I did in one motion without stopping. With other letters I stopped so those letters do not look as smooth as the ones I did in one motion. With signature number three, I had a hard time doing they name in one motion because the writing was smaller, and the letters were closer. This signature I did not do in one motion I frequently stopped and lifted my pen. 3. Use a hand lens to check if your forgeries have resting dots. If so, how many did each name have? Exemplar # 1: in this name I have 7 resting dots Exemplar # 2: in this name I have 3 resting dots Exemplar # 3: in this name I have 8 resting dots 4. In this exercise, you analyzed one exemplar. What would you do differently if you were performing an actual handwriting analysis? I would start of by first analyzing and taking notes on the original signature in order to be more familiar with its patterns and characteristics. I would then use a microscope with the suspected forged signature and check for pen lifts, tremors, and corrections that show forgery. I would also look for stops and starts in order to check for smooth jagged lines. I would also look for differences in slants and letter construction.
