(4, 5, a) Compare the events depicted in the movie against those found in real life. The storm shown in the 2000 film is based on a real event that happened in late October 1991. The meteorologist describes the recipe for the “perfect storm” as being a confluence of 3 storm systems. What were they? The 3 storm systems are hurricane, tropical cyclone, and tropical storm. 2. Do you think the size of the wave that capsizes the ship Andrea Gail in the film is realistic? (Although not mentioned in the clips, the length of the ship is approximately 70 feet.) Why or why not? The size of the wave created by the storm is unrealistic. I think a larger wave would be required to be able to capsize a 70-foot ship. A wave created by a tsunami would be better suited. Yes, I was under the impression hurricanes are not able to produce such big waves. After seeing how big of waves Hurricane Ian created, I find it more realistic. How was the recipe for “Superstorm” Sandy similar to the one that created the “Perfect Storm”? “Superstorm” Sandy also involved the combination of a tropical storm and a cold front. 8. List two reasons why winds and flooding from Sandy were worse than during the 1991 event depicted in The Perfect Storm. Hurricane Sandy occurred during a full moon which caused higher tides than normal. Hurricane Sandy also occurred in New Jersey and New York City. The shape of New York Harbor allowed water to funnel water inside the city which caused the widespread flooding.
