A Study of the Solar System Summary Questions
After completing the lab activities, please answer the following questions using complete sentences and in
your own words
. Do not copy information straight from your lab manual or the internet. Remember to cite any information that is not your own knowledge.
1.
Based on the information in this lab (especially Tables 1 and 2), list three (3) characteristics that all the inner, or terrestrial planets, have in common with each other. Three common characteristics that all the terrestrial planets have is a density greater
than 3.5g/cm. Another feature is that they all have a polar flattening percent of <1. Finally, all terrestrial planets are made of a rock material.
In the same vein, list three (3) characteristics that all the outer, or Jovian planets have in common with each other. 3 common characteristics that all the Jovian planets have is that they all have a rotation period greater than 10 years. They are all made up of gas. Finally, they all have a polar flattening percentage of greater than 1%.
2.
Which two (2) terrestrial planets are most similar in terms of size? The 2 closest terrestrial planets that are most similar in size are Earth and Venus.
What other characteristics do they have in common with each other?
Their densities are similar as well (5.5 & 5.2g/cm)
3.
Which two (2) Jovian planets are most similar in terms of size?
Uranus and Neptune are most similar in terms of size.
What other characteristics do they have in common with each other?
They both have a similar mean temperature (-195 &-200 Celsius)
4.
What did you learn about the sizes and distances of the planets in this lab that you did not know before? Please explain using complete sentences.
One thing I did not know about the planets that I know now is that the density of the terrestrial planets is far greater than the Jovian planets which are far greater in size.
