Cultural Artifacts
My First work is the painting, "The Lamentation", by Giotto di Bondone. During the Italian
Renaissance Era.
It was painted in the year 1305. The Medium is 'Fresco".
Its Dimensions are
6'6.75"x 6'0.75".
The Location is in, Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, Italy. My Second work is
painting, "The Merode Altarpiece, ca", by Robert Campin.
During the Netherlandish
Renaissance.
It was painted between 1427-1432.
The Medium is "Oil on oak panel.
Its
Dimensions are 2'1.5"x 3'10.5".
The Location is in, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Common Theme
The Main Theme in both paintings is Religion.
In both The Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ are
being depict, in the painting "The Merode Altarpiece"Jesus Christ is just mentioned to The Virgin
Mary by Gabriel when he is announcing to the Virgin Mary that she has been chosen by God to
be the Mother of His Child.
It is still much reference to both in these two paintings.
It is about
the becoming of Christ and the history.
Personal Experience
The Theme is personally meaningful to me because I believe in God, Christ, and the Virgin
Mary.
I am not an extremist religious person, but I do believe that there is a higher calling and
person who is watching and protecting us.
I believe in purity and all things Sacred.
I believe in
what Jesus Christ did for us, sacrificing his life so that we can all be saved, as well repenting
from all sins for salvation.
Believing that there is a higher purpose is what has guided me
through life as well as protecting and supporting the people that surround me and believe in me.
As I get older, I believe all of this to be true and I teach and show my son how important it is to
2
believe, and to believe everything has its purpose and reasoning, and that all sacrifices have it's
reward.
We celebrate Jesus Christ birth, and it is a National Holiday as well as his resurrection.
Profession
Professionally, Religion and believing in all that is powerful, transcends into my profession.
Believing that we have a higher purpose in life allows me to influence and affect others in a
positive way.
My believes influence my work and how I manage my team and peers, keeping a
positive and optimistic attitude, knowing that when something goes wrong or not as planned,
there is a purpose for it and I try to teach my team this, so that they can have a better reaction to
things and in term helps them to regroup quickly and respond to any "Fires" with a better sense
of urgency.
As I stated before, I am not a religious extreme, if that is even something that is
called, however, I do believe that we all have a purpose greater than what we see in our everyday
lives, and this helps to guide me, and it has led me to be able to influence a lot of people through
work in a very positive way.
I give people hope, I teach people that everything is possible
regardless of their background or upbringing as long as they have the desire to be better, have
integrity, moral and great work ethic.
Humanities Resources
While searching for the Cultural Artifacts, I came across a few resources to reference the two
paintings. The first resource I chose is, “Looking at Giotto’s The Lamentation. Thirty -two
Minutes” by Chris Morrison. I like how it details and speaks about the Sistine Chapel and
references the Scrovegni, or Arena Chapel in Pauda, Italy which interior is covered in Fresco
paintings by Giotto Di Bondone. “I was struck by the extent to which Giotto Anticipated
Renaissance era painting in his work” (Morrison.C. April 6, 2012. Looking at Giotto’s
Lamentation). This resource speaks on the possibility of Giotto's cycle of frescoes and the

speculation that, as an architect, he may have designed the Chapel of Scrovegni as well. The
Second resource is
"Early Netherlandish paintings". In Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History
by
Maryan W. Ainsworth, it is a showcase at the Metropolitan Museum of Art demonstrating the
Netherlandish era or Rennaissance that has a lot of influence in Robert Campin's paintings. The
third resource which was used for both paintings was, “Arstor Slide Gallery Collection” Sourced
from University of California, San Diego.
The Merode Altarpiece.
The fourth resource
,

Arena Chapel:
North Wall: Lamentation over the dead Christ.
The fifth resource was “The Interpretation of
Merode Altarpiece” from The Encyclopedia or Art Education. It speaks in detail about the
background of the painting and of Netherlandish Renaissance Paintings.
the sixth resource is,
"The Lamentation of Christ, by Giotto di Bondone- An Analysis", by artincontext website, which
provides a full analysis of the famous Proto-Renaissance depiction by the artist.
Historical Context
The historical context of “The Lamentation" s the Scrovegni Chapel, in Pauda, Italy, where the
interior is covered with Fresco paintings by Giotto Di Bondone. This painting emerged during
the Italian Renaissance.
It was during the 14th century, a period in History marked as the Proto-
Renaissance.
"Giotto di Bondone was a Florentine artist from the late Gothic and Pro-
Renaisasance period" (Art in Context. August 19, 2022). It was a style of art that Giotto
pioneered with his techniques. In “The Merode Altarpiece” is in 1427-1932 some sources date
it 1425-1428, is during the Netherlandish Renaissance, which are considered for some as “Low
Countries” artist wanted to expand their boundaries with painting.

Similarities and Differences
They are both similar because they both about Religion and the Holy Jesus Christ and Virgin
Mary. "The Lamentation" painting is about grief and apparent sorrow over Jesus Christ's death.
"This painting depicts the lamentation over Christ's dead body as a model for the viewer's own
contemplation and empathy". (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2000-2023) "The Merode
Altarpiece" is about the annunciation of the Birth of Jesus Christ.
"Is a triptych depicting the
Annunciation scene from the Bible" (Art in Context, August 19, 2022).
Both paintings are
relatable and very similar in terms of theme.
It is all about Jesus Christ, it is about Religion.
The
Difference is that one painting, "The lamentation" references the death of Jesus Christ and The
Virgin Mary is Holding him in her hands, and “The Merode Altarpiece”, Jesus Christ is not
present, but Gabriel is Announcing to The Virgin Mary that she will be the mother of his Child
“Jesus Christ”.
Medium
The Medium for the “The Lamentation” Giotto used Fresco Painting.
Giotto painted the
lamentation during the 14th century, a period in history marked as the Proto-Renaissance.
'Giotto was renowned for his Fresco painting, "Florentine artist Giotto (c.1266-1337) is
renowned for his naturalistic and realistic works in tempera and fresco" (Art in Context. August
19, 2022).
Giotto was innovative, and his style of painting involved a lot of emotive and
expressive faces, and use of pictorial devices to demonstrate space.
Robert on the other hand
used Oil in oak panel for “The Merode Altarpiece”, painting.
The painting is described as
"failing within an Early Netherlandish art Style"(Art in Context. April 29, 2022).
Robert Campin
style is to be considered, within the Late Gothic style.
His style is to be considered
5
revolutionary, "Summarizes the medieval tradition and lays the foundation for the development
of modern painting" (Art in Context. April 29, 2022).
Thesis Statement
The Thesis Statement for my Cultural Artifacts, “The Lamentation” by Giotto di Bondone and
“The Merode Altarpiece” by Robert Campin Despite both paintings coming from very different
times and regions, they both demonstrate the Religious Theme of Religion and Faith.
Both
Paintings demonstrate Suffering, Sacrifice, and devotion for others.
Audience
You may say that the ideal audience is anyone that is Religious and believes that there is a God
and Jesus Christ, but I believe is anyone that believes in a higher power and has great Faith. The
understanding of Faith, Devotion and Sacrifice.
These current times, there is an extreme lack of
faith, and the devotion toward doing good and being kind has shifted a lot on the recent years.
We will all benefit from sort of scaling back a bit in life and understand our purpose.
Message
To tailor my presentation for my audience and make it more understandable and relatable, I will
try to merge both painitngs meaning or message to make the message clearer for all audiences.
In “The Lamentation”, the message is clear is the mourning if Jesus Death, sorrow over the death
of our savior. You can see how The Virgin Mary is holding his lifeless body as everyone else
seems to be in sorrow, and the angels flying above. In “The Merode Altarpiece”, You see and
Angel (Gabriel) conveying a message to the Virgin Mary which we find out is letting her know
that she will have Gods Child. One painting is about his birth and the other one is about his
death. Both paintings revolve around Faith and Devotion for one another. Faith and Devotion for
Humanities.
