First Assignment
An exercise in applying Critical thinking in the study of Art History
The Critical Thinking General Education requirement at Henry Ford College states that all
graduates will be able to: Use Critical thinking and problem solving skills in addressing a
problem or situation described verbally, graphically, symbolically, or numerically. Critical
thinking is an approach to student centered learning that allows the students to relate
information to their own life and already existing knowledge. They can analyze new information,
evaluate and process it, and then apply it to something new, or their own life situation.
This assignment is an application of Critical Thinking in Art History.

textbook

pre-historic to around 1400
CE). The work can be from any covered culture or civilization, and from any geographical
location. Include an image with your report of 1-2 pages of text. Refer to page 2 of your syllabus
and follow the guideline for the format of the report.
You can use library sources, museum
collections, and online academic databases.
Examine the work, question the interpretation, hypothesize new interpretation, and
suggest different reasoning, interpretation, and purposes. Do not be judgmental when
analyzing a work of art from the past.
You should consider the cultural, social, religious and political characteristics of the
people and culture related to that work. Be neutral and objective.
Make sure that you include your own thought and opinion.
