Section A: Video 1: Case 586- Building Classroom Community through the Study of Chinese Art and Culture Video 2: Case 150- Learning About Cultural Identity Video 3: Case 1283- Analyzing American Literature through a Fish Bowl Discussion B1 Cultural Needs The first video, we see the class studying Indian culture so the students in the class can understand their classmate better. The classmate is going to visit family that is in India. This leads to the student asking questions about India and other cultures. When the students start asking questions, the teacher finds the perfect opportunity to teach the class about the classmates’ cultural backgrounds. When the class finished discussing Indian culture, the students started to ask about the Chinese. The students compare Asian cultures together, but they also compare them to American culture, the culture they are familiar with. Social Needs In the second video, the class is during a puppet show on Cinderella but in the Chinese version. The story is being demonstrated well by the students. They were both speaking and acting well in front of their classmates. The students in class talk about the show afterward. They also compare their culture to the Chinese culture. The teachers style of instruction allows for the learning of social growth, skills, and needs of the students. Emotional Needs In the second video, during the puppet show, the students were able to show their views. Because of the description their teacher gave them. The puppet show allows the students to
display the information they learned in the form of art.The students put their emotions into the puppets. The students’ emotional needs were met in a different fun way. B2 As seen in the third video, there are students with different emotional needs. The teacher still treats every student the same, even though they have different needs The teacher could have helped the student's needs with positive feedback. Doing these things, would show the teacher if the students understood the assignment without overloading them. Something that the teacher could have done in the second video was to allow her students to pair up in the classroom.. If they had been paired up, they might have gone into more detail about their social and emotional needs. B3 One of the most important things I learned in the first video was a teachers should listen to their student's questions and turn them into a lesson. I know that sometimes it is not always the case that it could happen. The video showed me, however, that many conversations held with students can be turned into a lesson. The teacher in the first video listened to the questions and discussions the students were having, turning that into a class. The students learned about different cultural backgrounds and diverse cultural needs. This allowed the students to get their questions answered. The second video shows the teacher using a different teaching style. This was very creative and used an art form. Sometimes students learn better by doing hands-on activities like a puppet show instead of working out of a book. This, as shown, can even happen with students
who are in kindergarten. By the teacher being creative, the student's social and emotional needs may have been met. B3a Culturally sustain pedagogy puts emphasis on the importance of diversity throughout the student body. It also compares the differences with cultural backgrounds, which shows the importance of cultural differences within the classroom and within the community. When teaching, it is always important to teach the connections and differences between the students backgrounds throughout the class. In doing this allows the students to have a positive view on their own culture and understand their different classmates better. As a future teacher, I would teach different cultures to my students. This would allow them to know about many different cultures.. B4 It is very important to include a student's caregiver in the class. There are many ways this could be done. An idea is that a caregiver could come to speak to the class and share their own experiences and culture. Maybe the caregiver could bring something from their culture to share with the students in the class. An example would be a type of clothing worn that is associated with their own culture. B5 The community can be involved in many ways when talking about culture. Like as an example, in my community, when classes start to discuss World War II, we have a lady from the community who is from Germany talk about her experience during her time in Germany during the World War. Another example is when learning Spanish as a foreign language, you could go to

a local Mexican restaurant and order in Spanish. Then, the waiters and staff at the restaurant can better help you understand the language and culture.
