Module 6 Short Responses – Question 1
Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the
article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it.
Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous
page. Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your
summary below. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long.
I choose the secondary source "Ireland's New Worlds: Immigrants, Politics, and Society in
the United States and Australia, 1815-1922." Malcolm Campbell wrote the piece. ACLS
Humanities E-Book publication details. The year of publication is 2008. This material was
discovered through the Shapiro Library. The book explains what prompted the Irish to begin
their immigration to the United States, how they were treated, and how they attempted to
integrate into the country. They were avoided for a variety of reasons. Many Indians disliked
them because they were Catholics. They were particularly angered when they began to
support the Democratic Party, and other leaders were concerned that these immigrants would
be able to decide elections in New York and other states.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 2
What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-
1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a
contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis.
The Racial Imbalance Act was created by the Massachusetts legislature in 1965 in response to
a federal inquiry into suspected segregation in Boston public schools. This was a contributing
reason since the Act prohibited school segregation and threatened to cut funds if schools did
not desegregate. In June 1974, federal Judge W. Arthur Garrity found in a lawsuit brought by
the NAACP* against the School Committee that Boston's schools were unconstitutionally
segregated. Because it was the litigation that permitted Judge Garrity to order the busing, this
was a contributing factor. In the early 1960s, Boston's tiny but increasing African American
population began protesting the poor quality of public schools in mostly black districts. This
was a contributing reason since the community raised concerns about the quality of the
schools. This prompted an inquiry.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three specific consequences of the Boston
busing crisis.
As a result, African Americans and whites were integrated into the same public schools. A
second effect would be white flight when the busing started. White families began sending
their children to nearby schools. A third effect would be that it began to ease racial tensions,
ultimately allowing African Americans to enter politics and seek for political office.
Module 6 Short Responses – Question 4
Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in
mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that
you will use to support this assertion. Describe one consequence of the event, and
explain one piece of evidence from your research that you will use to support this
assertion.
One factor might be the rise of nativist attacks on the Irish and their values. Because the
majority of Americans were protestants, they were opposed to the introduction of the Roman
Catholic faith into their towns. The nativists considered the Roman Catholic Church to be
distasteful because of its ideas and because the institution infringed on their definition of
republicanism.
