Clinical Field Experience A: A Planning for instruction Noemi Sepulveda Grand Canyon University SPD- 550 Prof. Rob Williamson Nov. 29, 2023
I had the pleasure of volunteering in a Pre-K Integrated classroom in Rose Hill Pre-K Center with, special education teacher Ms.S, general education teacher Ms. Lalicata, para Ms.Luz and another para Mr. Angel. “Co-teaching is a collaborative approach to instruction in which two teachers, typically a general education teacher and a special education teacher, work together to plan and then implement instruction for a class that includes students with disabilities” (CEC, 2023). While I was observing the class, I noticed the great teamwork that took place. Some students needed extra help and redirecting, while others were pretty independent. During prep time I was able to interview Ms. S. Ms. S told me she gets to do collaborating with Ms. Lalicata for lesso planning during the students either have nap time, prep time, or on Mondays after students are dismissed. She mentioned there’s not much working with each other for lesson planning but that they try their best. I asked how they work together and how do they come into agreements for the best success for their class. She mentioned that “it’s very important to have great communication and great collaboration in order to give the students the best role models and best teaching”. I truly believe with observing the class, that both teachers work very well together. I asked if she choose to work with Ms. Lalicata and she said, “no, all teachers get a chance to work with different classes in order to work best with all teachers”. Ms.S told me that, she has always worked with another teacher so she was prepared to work with Ms. Lalicata. She has collaborated with Ms. Lalicata during training, so she had a little experience with her, which made it exciting for her to work with her in the same class.
After observing Ms. S and Ms. Lalicata, I had a great experience of personally seeing an amazing collaboration classroom. Both teachers and paras had such a great communication and were very professional. “Communication and collaboration between general and special education teachers is vital to the success of special needs students” (TeacherVision, 2021). Some students had behavior problems, but all teachers knew exactly how to handle the behavior. It is very important to have a great team of teachers and paras in order to have a successful class and school year. I look forward to working with other teachers and paras in my class. In my experience as a sub teacher, I have experienced plenty of times working a long-term assignment and being the only sub teacher in the classroom with 20-25 students with no help, it was very challenging. “ Students have the opportunity to learn from teachers who may have different teaching styles, ideas, perspectives, and experience. It also makes it easier to implement differentiated instruction , Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and personalized learning ” (Understood for All, 2023). I rather work with a co-teacher or a para in the classroom to be able to give my students all the attention and help they need.
