Mass Media Influences on American Culture Xavier Slater University Of Phoenix Media Influences on American Culture HUM 186 Dr. Sherrie Madia 11/20/2023
Mass Media Influences on American Culture I remember back in the day when I used to sit outside on the porch with my grandpa, while he read the newspaper. I remember when I used to lay in bed with Grandpa and Grandma while listening to a scary “radio soap”. I was too scared to go back to my bed. These memories of mine are deeply treasured since times have changed and media has a different approach. Technology and Internet, I believe one of the major developments in the evolution of media is technology. Tablets, cell phones, and portable devices have made media more accessible. Back in the day, we used to go to the corner store to buy the daily newspaper. Now, we can simply open up our cellphone and we have all our news in the palm of our hand. This is all possible with the most perfect combination of technology and my following topic: the Internet. Let’s not forget that the internet has played a big role in media progression over the past years. Televisions Influence Television has had a significant impact on the American culture. For example, American Idol has played a huge role in changing the way we watched T.V., debuting in June of 2002 viewers were able to use their cell phones to place votes as to who would move forward in the show. There are now many different versions of this show on T.V. networks and American Idol is still on T.V. to this day. Another major influence television has had is reality T.V. It all started with M.T. V’s The Real World. Americans became fascinated watching other people’s drama and today you can find a reality show for anything from home renovations to solving murders in 48
hours (about 2 days) or less. The popularity of this type of T.V. caused an explosion of reality T.V. across America. Newspapers Influence One example of a newspaper’s influence on American culture would be politics. In the 1970’sboth political parties utilized national networks to provide a flow of partisan news and information for their supporters. Newspapers printed pamphlets, flyers, and ballots that voters drop in a ballot box. Another influence the newspaper has on American culture would be the front-page headline. Depending on what picture and wording is used the headlines can have everyone feeling full of hope, joy, or fear. When there are famous court cases being tried, the media coverage can tamper with the juror's decision. Media Coverage With the field of technology growing and all our electronics becoming “smart” it was no surprise that media coverage was inevitable. Now you can read your newspaper on your phone or computer. You can watch television on the go and search the internet to solve an argument. Media coverage has brought information to our fingertips. Music is readily available to listen to any time you want to hear a song. Ads are now digital coupons. Anything that was in print is now available to us on our phones, tablets, and computers. Conclusion Learning to adjust to the new way of receiving media can be difficult. I find that the elders in my family need my help to pay their bills online, order food, or even order groceries online. Not

everyone wants to go digital. My grandfather still reads the newspaper every Sunday. It can be challenging in today’s age of media to keep up with all the changes and new ways to make life less complicated, but for some this new digital media makes life just that, more complicated. Do we change with the times? Or hold onto the past ways? References Mass Media. (2020).
