●
Make sure sermon ideas are clear and well
worded.
●
Look for development material first in the
text.
●
Aim for a balanced appeal to the whole
person.
●
Make all development consistent with the idea.
●
Test each segment for its intended function.
●
Carefully plan the introduction and conclusion.
Write the division statements you are developing. You may use the sermon idea for planning development for the
introduction and conclusion.
1.
God reveals himself in and through the actions and words of believers.
2.
God uses believers (the church) to further others in the faith.
3.
God uses the testimonies of believers to embolden others to tell who God is.
4.
God will use any circumstance be used for his glory if we let him.
Sermon Idea: The Proper Perspective Keeps the Church on Task and Target
Circle the word or two in your statement that carry the central concept of your idea. Write your core terms here:
Proper Perspective
Write the ideas you have for development as
explanation
.
Explanation
aims for an understanding of the biblical
and homiletical concepts by using background and interpretation material.
1.
See Philippians 1:12-14, See Acts 2-3: the early church and spreading of the Gospel
2.
See Philippians 1:12-14, 18, Read Romans 8:28
Note the development as

you will use.
Illustration
seeks to illuminate the ideas through the use of
imagery and narrative to appeal to the imagination of the hearer.
1.
Illustration of a woman who comes into an auto parts store asking for a replaced 710 cap… come to find
out she was looking at it upside down and she needed an oil cap. Its all about the perspective that we
have. The world tends to give us an upside down perspective: to think of self first, to see things as
valuable that have no eternal value.
Write your ideas for development of the
argumentation
.
Argument
uses reasons to show how an idea makes sense
and to guide it around the rational barriers in the mind of the hearer.
1.
How did I come to know Christ… through the telling of someone else, and how did they come to know
Christ. What if they had not had the perspective of Christ?
2.
What if when Christ, as he went to the cross, decided that he did not deserve punishment and were to
save himself from the agony and pain of the cross, yet he instead insisted himself in submission to the
father, saying “not my will but yours be done”.
Plan your development as

change and action in a faith response.
1.
What is your perspective in your day to day, mundane routine? Is it just that, mundane and boring, or is
it opportunity for making consistent and daily eternal impact? Does the way you speak to a waitress
matter? How about how you treat your neighbors? Or how you talk about your friends and family at
work?
2.
Is your day to day about you and serving your interests, or is about a lost world that needs to know the
hope and necessity of Jesus?
Look back over your development notes and check for balance. Be careful about the amount of time a particular
segment will take in delivery. Make changes as needed.
