We Need Our Funding!
Performing arts are necessary for education, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and student self-expression of all ages. Yet, the local school board is considering cutting funding to the arts programs in our school. Why would we take something this important away? I aim to highlight the tremendous value the arts bring to our educational institution and advocate for their continued support. By exploring various genres of visual and performing arts, emphasizing the elements and principles of design, highlighting the perspectives of successful professionals, and discussing the arts' contribution to cultural diversity, we can understand why arts education deserves to be funded.
In visual arts courses, students explore various mediums, such as painting, sculpture, and photography. They learn to appreciate and analyze art by recognizing line, color, shape, form, and texture. These elements combine with design principles, such as balance, unity, contrast, rhythm, and emphasis, to create visually engaging and meaningful artwork. These can be used to display in our art studios in the area. The city of Huntsville can continue highlighting these students during our many festivals. Through direct experiences and thoughtful analysis, students develop a deep understanding of artistic techniques, aesthetic principles, and determination.
Performing arts contain disciplines like theater, dance, music, and film. In theater, students learn about stagecraft, blocking, lighting, and costume design while exploring storytelling and character development. In dance, they understand movement dynamics, choreography, and spatial relationships. In music, students delve into melody, harmony, rhythm, and composition. They analyze storytelling techniques, cinematography, and sound design in the film. Students can follow in the footsteps of the Isabelle brothers, who have designated themselves as developing students for the music and film industry
(Mahan, 2022)
. Students develop a keen sense of creativity, collaboration, and communication through these disciplines.

The arts hold a profound significance in shaping our humanity and enriching our lives. They provide a platform for self-expression and allow individuals to explore and communicate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Arts education nurtures imagination, critical thinking, and critical thinking skills. It encourages students to think creatively, fostering innovation and adaptability, which are vital in today's rapidly evolving world. By engaging with the arts, students develop empathy and gain a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives, fostering a sense of community and interconnectedness.
Many successful professionals from various fields understand the transformative power of the arts and actively support them. Business leaders such as Warren Buffett and Richard Branson emphasize the crucial role of creativity in entrepreneurship and problem-solving. They recognize that the arts cultivate risk-taking, flexibility, and resilience, essential for business success and beyond. Renowned actor and director Tom Hanks has spoken about how his involvement in school theater programs sparked his passion for acting and laid the foundation for
his successful career
(Kennedy Center, n.d.)
. The arts play a vital role in fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion. Through arts education, students are exposed to diverse cultural traditions, narratives, and perspectives. One of
my favorite actors who recently passed away, Chadwick Boseman, spoke on how important representation is for students to see themselves in the arts
(Chadwick Boseman Foundation, 2022)
. Visual and performing arts provide a platform for marginalized voices to be heard, celebrating cultural heritage, and promoting social justice. Students gain a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures by engaging with different art forms, promoting empathy, tolerance, and acceptance. This exposure to diversity prepares students for an interconnected global society and equips them with the skills to collaborate across cultures.

The arts are an optional extracurricular activity but an integral part of education. Students
develop those critical skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and empathy by engaging with visual and performing arts. These arts contribute to developing well-rounded individuals who are better prepared to face future challenges. Even successful professionals across various fields acknowledge the arts' transformative power and actively support them. The arts foster a culture of diversity by providing a platform for marginalized voices and promoting inclusivity. There is no need to cut the funding for performing arts when we all know it is an asset to the students. Cutting the funding leaves students who are not athletic to lose out on careers they truly desire. 3
