Patrick Brewton IS 413 What is the title/material’s appeal? The title of the book and its appeal is that it explores the idea of being different in a society that values conformity. The protagonist, Tris Prior, is Divergent, meaning she has aptitude for multiple factions in a world where everyone is divided into five factions based on their personality traits. Her Divergence makes her a threat to the status quo, and she must fight to survive in a world that fears what it does not understand. Identify the communities to which the primary character(s) belong(s). Is this a diverse title? The primary character, Tris Prior, is born into the Abnegation faction, which values selflessness and service to others. She later chooses to join the Dauntless faction, which values bravery and physical strength. The book is diverse in terms of personality traits and values, but it is less diverse in terms of race and ethnicity. The majority of the characters are white, and there are few characters of color. The author, Veronica Roth, is white. What differences are there between the book you chose and its adaptation(s)? There are a number of differences between the book and the film adaptation of Divergent. Some of these differences are minor, such as changes in the characters' clothing or hairstyles. Other differences are more significant, such as the omission of certain subplots or the addition of new scenes. One of the biggest differences between the book and the film is the way that Tris's Divergence is portrayed. In the book, Tris's Divergence is a secret that she must keep hidden from the government. In the film, Tris's Divergence is revealed to the government early on, and she is forced to become a pawn in their power struggle. Overall, the film adaptation of Divergent is a faithful adaptation of the book, but it does make some changes in order to fit the format of a two-hour film. What made this particular book a good (or not!) choice for adaptation? Divergent is a good choice for adaptation because it has a strong central character, an exciting plot, and a dystopian setting that is both familiar and
unique. The film adaptation was able to capture the essence of the book and make it accessible to a wider audience. Do you think the version you read/watched first changed how you read/watched the other version? Yes, I think that the version you read/watched first can change how you read/watch the other version. If you read the book first, you may be more critical of the film adaptation, as you will have your own preconceived notions about how the story should be told. If you watch the film first, you may be more forgiving of the book, as you will have already seen the story in a different format. Is there a YA book you've read that you'd like to see adapted? Yes, there is a YA book that I would like to see adapted: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This book is a powerful and timely story about a young black woman who witnesses the police shooting of her unarmed best friend. The book explores themes of racism, police brutality, and activism. I think that The Hate U Give would be a great film adaptation because it is a relevant and important story that needs to be told. The book is also very well-written, with complex and relatable characters. I believe that a film adaptation of The Hate U Give could be both entertaining and thought- provoking.
