The International Style architects revealed a racialized outlook when it came to the implementation of modernism. As modernism was becoming more international, America began to adopt styles from Europe such as the ornamentation and style that were heavily used within European architecture. As time progressed, America had seen this idea of ornamentation as associated with the working-class and the European immigrants. In America, the modern architecture that began o develop were more sleek and transparent. America classified simple an sleek architecture with the upper class. The reason for this was because, American architects began influencing the European architects to shy away form ornamentation and continue with modern architecture. in the MoMA Catalogue it was mentioned: “Mr. Hitchcock explains how fundamental was Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence upon the important Dutch architect J. J. P. Oud. The Germans, Gropius and Mies van der Rohe, also seem to have studied his work at some time in their careers.” This demonstrates the idea of America’s influence on modernism within Europe. As mentioned in Charles Davis’ work: “Amalgamated Dwellings and Williamsburg Houses represent two explicit attempts to visualize the collective character of working-class communities in New York City, which was especially important for the white ethnic immigrant communities gaining new power to physically shape their living environment. They balanced similar historical and aesthetic factors, including the popular associations of brick, art deco ornamentation, and the public reception of European modernism.” This quotes strengthens the argument discussed earlier, in which the European style architecture was being represented as the low-income class when it came to the Williamsburg Homes.

War technologies began transforming and influencing architectural design by strengthening the idea of expressionism and individualism. One architect that demonstrated a good example of this was Mies van der Rohe. He had a large impact on American cities in which he brought an elegance to their architectural design. During the war, Mies was famous for producing a new aesthetic and design related independent from structure. An example of this was the Barcelona Pavilion. During this time, architecture was much more solid and heavy due to ornamentation that was favored in Spain. This building was signified as a landmark of modern architecture. This was due to the difference in design compared to the rest of the city. The Barcelona Pavilion was a light and airy design in which Rohe emphasized “less is more.” It also contrasted the surrounding context because the buildings found in Spain were usually favoring in detail and color. Through the Barcelona Pavilion, Mies van der Rohe was able to showcase his individualism and modernistic ideals during the war period.
