1.
Based on your reading of William Chamber's "Dissertation on Oriental Gardening", and Goddel’s analysis of this primary source, now and why was Chinese garden design used in designing English gardens? How is such use connected to the architectural typology of the ’Folly’?
2.
How is Goddel’s 'long history' of the reception of the Chinese garden by Europeans a repository of the way Europeans became to use 'nation' and 'race' as interchangeable terms, and ultimately led to the radicalized categorization of the world?
1.
Based off the primary and secondary readings, the use of Chinese garden design in English gardens was for the necessity of balance and education. Chambers used Chinese garden designs within the English gardens to create a more powerful empire and for colonial expansion. Goddel mentioned within the secondary reading that the importance of the Chinese gardens was to eliminate the tendencies of The Europeans of being too formal and being too naturalistic; they wanted a happy medium. This such use connects to the architectural typology of the "folly" because these gardens were using a picturesque style making the gardens only to blend in within the landscape and for no important purpose.
2.
Goddel’s long history of the reception of the Chinese garden by Europeans is a repository of the way Europeans became to use nation and race as interchangeable terms because of the view on race being connected to the growth of culture. These gardens that the Chinese were able to accomplish became an important aspect of their racial heritage and reflected their culture as well. This ultimately led to the radicalized categorization of the world because Goddel discusses how the only way to show the Chinese that they were inferior in the world was by burning and destroying the importance of what makes their nation powerful - gardens.
