My journey into researching the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis began with a deep recognition of a societal issue that had demanded exploration. It was more than an academic pursuit; it was a call to delve into the heart of a crisis that is affecting a vast number of communities. As I reflected on the motivation behind the study, I recognized the gravity of the issue and the imperative need for understanding and action. The careful formulation of a research
proposal became my roadmap, depicting the scope, objectives, and intended contribution to existing knowledge.
I worked hard to craft and refine research questions, emphasizing the importance of precision and relevance in framing the investigation. Each refinement brought a deeper understanding of the complexities involved, pushing me to question and reshape my inquiries. The evolving nature of the questions highlighted the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the crisis itself.
Proposal Obtaining and Vetting Sources

Being able to get approval for my research proposal was the first milestone in this intricate journey. It was a process that demanded not only academic precision but also an awareness that is important for the ethical responsibility that is associated with the subject matter. Looking at the insights into the precise process of identifying and vetting sources brought
about challenges in obtaining access to certain materials. The barriers I encountered were not practical; they were a conformation to the sensitive nature of the topic.
With that, things such as emphasizing the criteria selection, relevance, reliability, and diversity of perspectives became prominent. The challenges I faced clarified the need for adaptability and perseverance in overcoming any initial setbacks. There were obstacles that had come up and that I had to face while trying to navigate institutional barriers and establish rapport with gatekeepers who controlled access to crucial data.
Some stakeholders were hesitant and emphasized the need for delicate negotiations. With that, I learned that perseverance and diplomacy were as crucial as the academic merit of the proposal.
Putting Together the Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography was an important component. It served as a compass for the research journey I embarked on. Systematically compiling this bibliography required that I have a very delicate balance between academic scholarship and representing the voices of those who were impacted by the crisis. For me having to explain the rationale behind each source selection became a process of weaving together a narrative that reflected the complex nature of the issue.
The challenges of combining diverse perspectives and maintaining a balanced representation in the bibliography became evident. Each used did a thing such as adding a layer

to the narrative while presenting challenges and triumphs that were unique. Upon going and revisiting and adjusting the bibliography as the research progressed highlighted the evolving nature of the literature review, which showed the landscape of the crisis.
Some obstacles emerged while navigating the vast sea of available literature and ensuring
a comprehensive representation. Some sources posed challenges in terms of bias or limited accessibility. Some mistakes made were initially me overlooking certain seminal works, highlighting the importance of continuous review and enhancement.
Studying and Taking Notes on Source Material
I had a bunch of great sources and with that, I went ahead and took a dive into taking a ton of great notes. This stage was not just about extracting information but about absorbing the narratives and experiences that were summarized within each source. Some challenges came with synthesizing diverse perspectives and maintaining objectivity among emotive subject matter.
The importance of meticulous notetaking was great for not only capturing key insights but also the nuances that defined each narrative. It was a process of distilling information, recognizing patterns, and acknowledging the emotional weight embedded in the stories shared. This phase made for a significant interaction with the source material. It shaped the research and me as the researcher. One obstacle I faced was the emotional toll of engaging with the agonizing stories of individuals who have been affected by the crisis. It was hard for me to maintain emotional resilience while at the same time trying to remain empathetic. It was something I had to really

balance out. One mistake I made was having and underestimated opinion on the impact that was emotional to those who had to endure the distress. These mistakes did help me see the lessons and how valuable they were for when it came to getting the proper research done. Knowledge Derived from Source Materials
The narrative took a deepened exploration into the knowledge gained from the study materials. Each source, Davis, Jenkins Nash, Garcia, Johnson, and Smith was individually dissected, offering a refined analysis of the unique insights and perspectives they contributed. Davis's journalistic depth, Jenkins Nash's statistical analysis, Garcia's sociocultural insights, Johnson's journalistic narrative, and Smith's academic rigor provided a comprehensive mosaic of the crisis.
The exploration taken went far beyond a mere review of sources. It involved reconciling divergent viewpoints, synthesizing information to construct a coherent narrative, and acknowledging the gaps and limitations within the existing body of knowledge. This phase was marked by a constant dance between scholarly analysis and having an understanding that was empathetic for the stories that came with the data.

As my research journey developed, the critical role of self-evaluation and reflexivity became very apparent to me.
