How do an individual's experiences in Bronfenbrenner's macrosystem impact their views on or
practices surrounding death?
According to our textbook Bronfenbrenner’s macrosystem is the larger cultural or societal
context in which the microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem are embedded. It includes a
society’s cultural values, laws, political and economic systems, and institutions. (Sigleman, 2017)
The cultural beliefs of an individual can influence how they view death. Meaning that if an
individual has been raised in a culture that embraces death as a next step in someone’s life cycle,
they are more likely to embrace death as the natural cycle of one’s lifespan. Whereas one who
has been raised in a culture that believes death is the final step in someone’s lifespan may not be
so open to believe that their family member will be waiting for them after their own death.
Choose two cultures to compare (not necessarily from the article) and describe their views on
death. How do they differ? How are they similar?
While there are many cultural views on death and the afterlife I chose to focus on Western and
African cultures.
In the African culture they believe in the afterlife and embrace their loved ones that have
passed. According to Eyetsemitan, the traditional African belief system is also referred to as
ancestor worship and is based on an understanding that the life course is cyclical and not linear.
Based on this system of belief, those who are dead are alive in a different world and can
reincarnate (and return to this world) in new births. (
Ekore&Lanre, 2016
)
In Western cultures death is viewed differently according to a podcast I found In Western
cultures, there's often a sense of mystery and dread when a person dies. The body is quickly
picked up and taken to a morgue or funeral parlour, remaining out of sight of the grieving family
until the wake or funeral. (Bateman,2019) This is how things are done in my family. I lost my
mom a few years ago and the whole process happened very fast and left me feeling lost in the
end.
How does Bronfenbrenner's ecological model apply to the following programmatic themes?
The programmatic theme that best applies to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model is ethics. The
theme of ethics deals with values. When comparing death views in different cultures you are
going to see different values in each culture. Like it says in our text these can differ from culture
to culture, from neighborhood to neighborhood, and from home to home. (Sigleman, 2017)
Even though they may have similarities they will also find differences in an individual’s own
personal ethical views of death and the afterlife.
