Pathos is conveyed in different ways through different ministry leaders. How can you preach with passion and remain authentic in relation to your God-given personality? MIN-430 Topic 8 – DQ 2 October 19, 2023 Professor and Classmates, Aristotle says that there are three modes of persuasion, Ethos relies on the credibility and trustworthiness of the source. Logos relies on statistics, testimonies, and personal narratives, while Pathos relies on emotions and the fear or guilt of proof and appeals with passion. This mode of persuasion appeals to human emotions. Humans feel complex emotions, and feelings can often trump common sense and logic in behaviors and actions. Due to the complexity of feelings, pathos is a powerful mode of persuasion that allows people to connect with one another and experience emotions. Jonathan Edwards, accused of sensationalism in the Great Awakening was quoted as: “I should think myself in the way of my duty, to raise the affections of my hearers as high as I possibly can, provided they are affected with nothing but truth, and with affections that are not disagreeable to the nature of what they are affected with" (Some Thoughts Concerning the Revival in the Great Awakening, in Piper 80). Ethical (and effective) communicators use pathos to prompt people to act in accord with the truth. The realities and relationships of our world require that we engage heart and head, life and logic, truth and love in the proclamation of God’s Word. (Chapell, 2018, p. 15). To preach with passion means that we realize that we are more Proclaimers than Bible Explainers, more Declarers of truth than Explainers of truth. Therefore, when we preach with passion, it is not about our performance. It is more about the urgency with which we bring the message. You can’t fake passion or love it must come from your heart. Have a burning desire in you to preach God’s goodness and mercy and feel the urgency to have your audience want to give their hearts to Jesus based on what He did for them at Calvary.
