Elements of a Story Class Notes (Fill-in-the-Blanks) 1. The setting is the Where and When during which a story occurs. 2. Define flat character. A character that does not develop during the story 9. The plot is the organized pattern that make up the structure of a story 10. Three types of plot are the following. Closed plat- A problem is raised - resolved at and Open plot - A problem is raised - Not resolved at end Circular plot- Story ends as it begins 11. Draw a "plot diagram" and identify the parts of a plot. Exposition: introduction; character/setting/ conflict Rising Action: events that occur as result of central conflict Climax: highest point of interest / Suspense Falling Action: Tension eases; show the results/ resolve the conflict Resolution (a.k.a. Denouement): loose ends are tied up / Conflict is solved Define conflict. Dramatic struggle between & forces / Conflict can be internal or external 14. What are some types of external conflict? Third person limited point of view: Outside narrator Knows thoughts / Feeling of one character Third person omniscient point of view: knows the thoughts all the characters. 16.
