1 God’s Story Paper Assignment Connor Kail Evangelism 101 Professor Russell Sept 11, 2023
2 Sinful Nature It is hard to put a definition of sin. I describe sin as an immoral action against God. Sin first entered the world in Genesis where Adam and Eve ate the fruit that God forbid them from eating. This sin doomed mankind by separating us from God. Romans 3:23 states “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” There was only one person who lived a sinless life which was Jesus. So, what is the consequence of sin? Well short term it separates you from God. Long term it results in death. Genesis 3:3 states “but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.” Knowing how this story from Genesis ends, we can infer sin equals death. There is only one way to fix the problem of sin. This is to repent of your sins. The only reason we can be forgiven of our sins is because God sent his only son to die for our sins so if we believe in him we will have eternal life (John 3:16). 1 John 1:9 states “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Accepting or Rejecting the Redemptive Work of Christ My parents raised me in a Christian household. They brought me to Church almost every Sunday, encouraged me to be active in my church’s youth group, and talked with me about God pretty much daily. Even though I knew about Jesus from a very young age I never fully accepted this relationship. During my middle school years and early high school years I pretty much stopped living my life for God. I thought that I had no problems, and I could defeat all my battles whether that was a physical illness or mental. During my sophomore year of high school, I got sick with covid and I can honestly say this was the best thing for me at the time. I was struggling with depression during this time and not enjoying anything I was doing anymore. When I was looking through my room one day, I came across my Bible
3 and started reading through some of my favorite verses. I flipped pages until I got to Peter and read the first verse I saw which was 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your care upon him; for he careth you.” It was then when I recommitted my life to Jesus, talking to him daily to get through these struggles. Living Spiritually My goals have changed concerning my spirituality. Pretty much everyday it is becoming more important to get a closer relationship with God. One of the things I’m working on right now is living according to God’s will. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says “Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.” This means to me living a more sinless life than I have been living. The way I’m trying to work on that is by reading my Bible more and more, trying to learn what Jesus and his disciples did in tough situations. When I was younger, I really struggled with reading in general. I could never pay enough attention and understand what I read. This led to me only reading about things I was interested in which didn’t include anything related to spirituality. I went from never reading my Bible to where I’m trying to read everyday in the mornings and night. Another thing I want and need to work on is talking about God. That is one reason I’m excited to take this course. I have always had a problem talking to people in general, I’m very shy and sometimes it’s tough to talk about stuff that I’m comfortable talking about. I think this is very important because people that I care about might not be saved, and I need to make sure they are going to spend eternity with the Lord. Many verses in the Bible talk about spreading the Gospel. One of them is Mark 16:15 which says, “Go into the world and preach the gospel to all of creation.” I plan on continuing to learn how to spread the gospel and I’m certain that God will help me get over my obstacles to learn how to spread the gospel better.
