Sharing the Gospel Paper Evangelism 101 Professor Daniel Russell October 2, 2023 Connor Kail

Part 1: Preparing to share the gospel One of my best friends is unsaved. I met Kyle back in middle school where we were seated next to each other during English class. We bonded over playing basketball because we were both on the middle school basketball team. Since then, we have built a relationship where we can talk about pretty much anything. Kyle knows about God and is open to talking about God, but he hasn’t started his spiritual journey with God. Me and Kyle have had a few conversations over the years about God. I have even started inviting him to church on Sundays and bible studies on Wednesday’s. Usually when we talk about God its usually after church about the sermon. He has only come a few times so far but I’m starting to invite him more frequently. I would contact Kyle asking if he would want to hang out like normal, and eventually I would change the conversation to a spiritual one. I would be praying to have the boldness to go through this and not get worried about losing a friend, and I would just ask to have the right words to say during that conversation. I think I would start the conversation by just talking about the basic things of Christianity. I think I’d start by talking about John 3:16 where God gave up his son for our sins and our eternal life. I think the next step would be why I turned my life to Christ. There was so much going wrong in my life during that time, and I think he could relate to that. After I gave my life to Christ my life gradually started getting better and better and it was the best decision I’ve ever made, so I’m hoping to help him make that same decision. The plan for the meeting is to just hang out like normal on any other weekend. It’ll probably be going out to the basketball courts and playing for a while. It will be in person and there will not be a service involved. I think one of the easiest ways to start a spiritual conversation would be to talk about all the biblical things that were said in the bible that are happening today. I don’t think he will reject it because he always participates in the conversation. I just hope this time he will start living for Jesus. One app that has helped me is the GodTools app because it gave me videos on how to start talking about

God, how to not get worried, and how to talk to family and friends. All of these I have struggled with. One verse I know I will use is John 3:16, John 14:6, and Romans 6:23. Another verse that I’m thinking of using is Philippians 4:13. One reason I might use this verse is because Kyle is trying to walk onto the basketball team and this verse is perfect for someone trying to do something like that. I have not asked anyone to pray with me yet but I will ask my parent for prayers before I meet up with Kyle. I have prepared myself to lead in prayer. Mostly I have prepared in a salvation prayer. Even if he doesn’t come to Jesus on this day I will continue to try and bring him to Jesus and I will continue to pray for him. Part 2: Sharing the Gospel It took a little while to actually meet up with Kyle because we were busy but when we did meet up the day went as planned. We went out to the basketball courts shot around for a while and when we were taking a break, I was able to start a conversation about God. One of the things that surprised me was how he was actually getting started with his journey with God. I first started talking to him about when my life was a mess. I started talking how Jesus saved my life from a never-ending spiral, and how my life changed after accepting Christ. I started talking about the verses that I read when I started my spiritual journey which was John 3:16, and John 14:6. He was able to understand what I was saying and for the most part of the conversation he was quiet which was unusual. When I stopped talking he asked me “how do I give my life to Christ?” I told him to repent of his sins in prayer and I prayed with him. During the conversation he never rejected God, and he didn’t give any excuses to get out of the conversation. I feel like this was a complete success but I didn’t feel like I had to do much because he wanted to start his spiritual journey, he just didn’t know how and that’s where I came in. This experience was very positive. This is one of the first times where I tried to Evangelize, and I was able to help one of my friends to come to Christ. didn’t have to do much to get him to come to Christ. I invited him to Church more and Bible studies more and he was coming more frequently. I talked to him about how he was doing and how he was getting along spiritually. I did feel prepared, but I was still super nervous that day about doing this. I think the hardest part of this experience was getting started with the conversation. For some reason I was really nervous and I honestly thought I was going to back out of this but I’m very glad I didn’t. I think the best thing of this class was honestly that Discussion Board of the apps because that GodTools app really helped me get over some of my fears about Evangelizing. Some advice I’d give to someone who is starting to Evangelize is to research and figure out what your approach will be. I’d also say to figure out how to get over your fears of Evangelizing because you will be way more effective Evangelizing with no fears.
