Humanities Discovering Connections
I have chosen "Literary Arts" as my area of specialization, and I've discovered the
following three instances:
Molière (French dramatist, 1622–1673)'s "The Misanthrope"
Amy Tan, a 1952-born Chinese-American novelist, is the author of "The Joy Luck Club."
The novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude" was written by Colombian author Gabriel Garca
Márquez (1927–2014).
Description
Example 1:

Misanthrope-play-by-Moliere
Molière wrote the satirical comedy "The Misanthrope" in the 17th century, during the
French Baroque era. Alceste, a jaded nobleman who struggles with his failure to live up to
society's standards and is finally turned off by its hypocrisy, is the main character of the play.
Alceste gets sucked more and deeper into a web of political intrigue and love problems as the

play progresses. Molière's satire of French society and customs is sharp and cutting, according to
experts in French literature.
Example 2:
Culture and period: Contemporary Chinese-American
Title: "The Joy Luck Club"
Author: Amy Tan (born 1952)

Citation: Tan, A. (1989). The Joy Luck Club. Penguin Random House.

Amy Tan's book "The Joy Luck Club" delves into the lives of four Chinese-American
women and their offspring. The story, which is set in present-day San Francisco and jumps back
and forth in time to tell the tales of the moms' prior lives in China and their efforts to blend into
American society, is set in the city. Tan examines issues of identity, cultural history, mother-
daughter relationships, and the challenges of being an immigrant in America via the intricate
interweaving of the tales of the four families.
Example 3:
Culture and period: 20th century Colombia
Title: "One Hundred Years of Solitude"
Author: Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014)

The was first published in 1967 and chronicles the multi-generational history of the
Buenda family throughout a fictional town called Macondo. The book paints a vivid picture of
Colombian society and its past by fusing elements of magical realism, political satire, and
historical allegory. It is regarded as one of the most important pieces of Latin American literature
from the 20th century and has been translated into many other languages.
Discover The Connections
The three literary arts examples all explore intergenerational relationships and the
complications that result from them, which is one thing they have in common. Molière's "The
Misanthrope" illustrates the conflict between teenage love and social standards, and Amy Tan's
"The Joy Luck Club" explores the bond between immigrant moms and their American-born
daughters. Similar to this, Gabriel Garca Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" illustrates
the cyclical nature of time and the recurrent themes of history that influence the bonds between
generations of the Buenda family. These works illustrate the difficulties and pleasures of
negotiating familial relationships in various circumstances, including those involving various
cultures, eras, and time periods.

The book "An Introduction to Literary Studies" is a good starting point for discussing the
examples I provided. I will be able to assess many elements of the works, including their themes,
characters, and plot arcs, with the use of this instrument. Additionally, it will give me the terms
and information I need to evaluate the connections between the characters in each work.
