1 Reflective Essay on Modern Media Paige Stephenson Anthropology 300: Cultural Anthropology Nightingale College Professor Celeste Henrickson 27 November 2022 Media is defined as a word that is used to describe a set of technologies that connect multiple people at one time to shared content, (Peake, 2020). When we hear the word media,
2 many of us think of social media, which connects people from all around the world. Media can also be broadcasting, publishing, and the internet. Anthropologists study mass communication and digital media, as well as the ways media is designed for use by specific communities or cultural groups, (Peake, 2020). In their fieldwork, anthropologists study groups to get a better understanding of them and how they interact , using qualitive and quantative research, (Nelson, 2020). When anthropologists study media, they study the media in two different ways. First, they will choose a specific category that they want to focus on, such as television or the Internet. Second, they will narrow their studies to a specific group or community. When studying media, anthropologists want to find if it is meaningful, and how audiences feel about media. Media is something that is used by so many individuals all around the world and is a great tool . Since media is so widely used, it can be a great tool in many different professions. Nurses can use media in a variety of ways. Media can be used for nurses to connect with other nurses to share similar experiences or to raise awareness among the public on a specific health topic. Nurses can also use media in their place of work specifically. With the introduction of various forms of media, nurses are now able to perform tasks faster and more efficiently. Nurses can chart using an EHR, send labs and get results faster, communicate with patients, and do a variety of other things. Media in the medical field has allowed medical professionals to meet their patients' needs, as well as allow them to participate more in their health goals . As a nurse, I plan on using media to provide the best care for my patients. Now that hospitals have adopted electronic health records, all nurses and medical professionals can chart their patients' care. EHRs are so beneficial, as well as increase patient safety. For example, when it comes to giving medication to patients, media is used each time to verify the patient and ensure the right medication, dosage, and route, and that the medicine is given at the right time. As a
3 nurse, I will also be able to receive faster lab results, incorporate my patients into participating more in their health and being able to communicate with patients more via a patient portal . Media in the medical field has made an impact on many people and has become very beneficial, not only to the workers but as well as consumers. Social media provides consumers or healthcare with tools by which they can share with others their health concerns even as they arise, and receive a very immediate response, either from healthcare providers or from other members of the public, (Barry and Hardiker, 2012). Media has also allowed for productivity to be increased, and physical exertion to be decreased. Nurses can also communicate with other nurses to share experiences or gain knowledge. So not only has media been beneficial for patients and providers, but it has also given nurses an outlet . Although there are positive outcomes of using media in nursing, there are also some drawbacks. Some nurses have taken using media as their outlet to the extreme. I have seen many nurses use social media platforms, such as Tik Tok, to reflect on some experiences they have had with previous patients. In some cases, nurses have lost their jobs by disclosing too much information on social media. Another possible drawback is there will not be as much interaction between the nurse and the patient, due to using media more, it is less likely to have more of a nurse-and-patient relationship. Even though this may not always be the case, in my own experiences, I have not had many interactions with nurses where I developed a positive nurse- and-patient relationship . Although there can be some concerns regarding using media, such as it can be a distraction or cause a lack of interaction with others, it has many positive effects as well. Using media in nursing has changed the overall outcome and how we care for patients. Media must be used in healthcare so that we as nurses can provide the best possible care to our patients. When
