Teacher: Caitlin Hicks Grade/Subject: 2 nd Grade Science Lesson Title: Living Organisms Learning Objective: Objective 1: Students will list ways living things can be categorized. Objective 2: Students will sort images into plants and animals. Objective 3: Students will be able to list similarities and differences between plants and animals. Objective 4: Students will be able to justify reasons for catrgorizing a Venus Fly trap as a plant or animal. Standards 2.LS4.1 Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. Differentiation Student 1 has autism. This student is in need of having extra visuals to assist him in the lesson. Visual cues on sentence strips will be give to the student for every part of the lesson. Student 2 has ADHD and Dyslexia. This student struggles to create words when writing. This student’s writing rubric will be adjusted and this student will be allowed to use her device to dictate her writing. Student 3 struggles in math. During this lesson the students will need to measure. To decrease frustration this student will be given paper with set measurements to use against the celery. Asking why do scientists debate how living things can be categorized? Asking how are the plant and animal kingdoms alike and different? Asking how would you categorize a Venus Fly Trap? Asking how can an animal’s physical features allow it to live in a certain place? Withstand weather? Keep it safe? Asking what is the unique funciton of succulents such as celery and aloe? Activity -Teacher pours a large bag of assorted candies on a table to get attention of students -Teacher will lead students in sorting the candies into categories Have a discussion on the ones that could go into more than one category or more than one way to sort the groups of candies. -Teacher will tell students living things can be categorized to By kingdom By species By family -Teacher will lead students in discussion on categorizing living things into plants and animals using a tree map. Create on board and model how students can categorize on paper. -Teacher will show student a celery stalk while showing where it would go on the categorizing tree map Place in a class Ask volunteer to put colored water into the glass. -Teacher will tell students plant and other plants have similar functions to animals that help it survive. -Teacher or student will pass out celery stalks and cups. Students will then pour colored water into their cups. -Students will use rulers to measure the length of the red stalk every 30 minutes during that day. Students will chart on a graph each time. -The teacher will show the students come around the table.
-The teacher will get the Venus Fly Trap and use a pencil to have it close. -The teacher will then play a video for the students on the Venus Fly Trap catching flies. Exit Ticket -Students will be given the prompt : “How would you categorize a Venus Fly Trap?”
