Kimberly Newman School of Education, Liberty University EDUC 319: Differentiating Literacy Assignment Professor: LaShera McElhany February 19, 2024
Step 1 Arctic Animals (2 nd Grade) Chosen Population: ELL Diagnostic/Pre-Assessment: The students will get the fun facts and pictures of the animals to determine which animal goes with that fun fact. The students will put them on the desk first to make sure the pictures match the fun fact. Formative Assessment: We will go over the arctic animals together to get a clear understanding of each animal. This gives the teacher and students time to ask any questions about the animals and the fun facts. At this moment I will be observing the students and listening to the input they give about the animals. Summative Assessment: The students will be given a test on Arctic Animals about the animals and facts about the animals. They will match the animals to the fun facts. Students will i dentify at least 16/20 characteristics and facts about the arctic animals correctly.
Instruction/Modeling: First I would pass out the materials to make sure all students have what they need before we get started. I would pass out the pencils and paper that the students will take notes on about Arctic Animals. Once we review the animals together, I will pass out the paper that we just reviewed. I will play a read aloud book called, “Amazing Arctic Animals” by Jackie Glassman. After listening to the read aloud the students will cut out the animals and the fun facts we reviewed earlier. The students will match the animal's pictures to the fun fact on their desk. This will give me the opportunity to walk around to make sure everyone is doing the assignment correctly before gluing. Afterwards we will pass out the graphic organizer sheet and label each of the boxes with the Arctic Animals names. Then have the students fill in information about each animal. Have a discussion for the students to be able to identify the things that are like all the animals and have them write that on the paper at the top. The ELL students I will provide a word bank when completing the graphic organizer and the test along with a written definition of compare and contrast.
