Madalyn Stanfield 11/7/2023 “Concerted Cultivation and the Accomplishment of Natural Growth” Reading #8 Questions to Consider 1. Note two ways the parenting styles of working-class and middle-class parents differ from each other in how they raise and interact with their children. a. Working-class parents versus middle-class parents were largely discussed with the comparison of concerted cultivation versus natural growth. Parents raising their children as individuals in the working class tend to pertain to that of natural growth, accepting that their children are their own individuals and will grow into happy, successful ones with the “push” from their parents, however they will make their future on their own. Parents raising their children as individuals in the middle-class, tend to pertain to that of concerted cultivation, typically expecting their children to follow in their footsteps or attempting to make their children;s life decisions for them. 2. What research methods were used for this study? What were some of the costs and benefits of it? a. The research method used in this study was observational, specifically naturalistic observation. When researching parenting styles and how that influences the development of the children, it is best to perform research without any interference, which is where observationalism comes in. The speaker strictly viewed and observed the relationship between child and parent, as well as tendencies in terms of parenting and/or how the children are raised. However, because the researcher is not to interfere, and essentially is to pretend he/she is not there, there may be gaps of information or questions left unanswered. 3. Think about how you grew up. How did your parent (or parents) interact with you? Does your experience fit one of the models Lareau presents here? a. Growing up, I faced each of the two models from each parent, which I believe is because my parents-while they both came from low income family backgrounds-value their financial statuses differently. My mother raised me telling me that I had the decision to do what I wanted with my life, as long as I made wise life decisions and I was happy with what I decided to do. However, my dad was and still is very money oriented, and viewed success primarily in the eyes of money. Therefore, he raised me with words such as “you need to go to a renowned college and be a doctor or a lawyer so you can be rich like me”. 4. What is the author’s main point? a. In Lareau’s article Concerted Cultivation and the Accomplishment of Natural Growth , her main point was to observe and explore different families of working and middle class parents in order to ultimately define concerted cultivation and natural growth, and further to determine what that means in terms of how the parents interact with their children.
