GARBAGE PROJECT: The Excavation at Morgantown My name is Moriah McBride, and I am working with the archeology division of WVU. I have recently been given the task of exploring an archeological site and recording my findings. Me and my team’s overall goal for this project is to observe a bag of trash t hat we found on the site, try to decipher what went on within the site, and discover whose belongings we have in our possession. 1. List the name(s) of individual(s) living at this archaeology site? 1. John Bakewell (hunting/fishing catalog/magazine, motor companies addressed to him) 2. Heather Bakewell (parachute brochure) 3. John Bakewell Junior (crossword, club scouts magazine) 4. Mailyn Bakewell (birthday card) 2. How old is the site? This site is about 11 or 12 years old. We can estimate that it dates back to 2011-2012. Some of the artifacts that support this are the 2011 fishing summary, the National police shooting competition dating Sept 16-20, 2012, and the March 2012 elementary school calendar. Also, there was a lottery ticket from March 29 th , 2012. 3. Based on your answer to question #1 above, provide a summary of the household’s composition including the individual’s role within the household, their sex, age and the types of activities in which you believe they engaged. There are two adults, one male and one female, father and mother, in the household that are most likely in their thirties to forties based on the ages of their two children that also live in the household. The oldest child is female and thirteen years old, and the youngest is a male who is either eight or nine years old. The mother is a teacher, and the father has some sort of state, law enforcement job. Some artifacts that prove this include the birthday card addressed to Mailyn that said “finally a teenager” placing her at thirteen years old. The Kotex feminine pads also lead us to believe there are females in this household old enough to have a period. John Junior’s schoolwork says he is in third grade, making him around eight or nine years old. Club scouts and the scholastic book fair also puts him around that age. The printout of an article from police training.com, six challenges to strengthen your gun fight, and the travel expense receipt for the bureau of commonwealth means someone is a state employee. And the motor companies in John Senior’s name suggests he has a work vehicle, making him the more reasonable of the two jobs to have a work vehicle. Which leaves Heather as being a schoolteacher, proven by the Calvery chapel Christian school personal request form. 4. What types of activities are evidenced by the artifact assemblage?
Some of the family’s probable activities include shooting, hunting, fishing, video games, sports, parachuting, and watching movies. The artifacts that suggest the shooting, hunting and fishing activities include the 2011 fishing summary which is a type of handbook if you buy a hunting or fishing license, the doe hunting application, the bullets for a shotgun, the deer harvest report card, the rifle target, and the National police shooting competition on September 16th-20 th , 2012. The video game gift card found in the trash suggests someone in the household enjoys playing video games in their free time. The pass to the Steelers vs. Patriots game suggests that someone enjoys sports. And the parachuting brochure addressed to Heather leads us to believe she enjoys that activity. Finally, the ticket to the theater to see Hunger Games on 3/24/12 suggests they enjoy watching movies. 5. Political/Social/Religious beliefs? The family seems to be very Christian, and we can also assume them to be more on the conservative side. The artifacts that support this are the Gospel for Asia Christian charity pamphlet, the paper from the Protestant Baptist church, Calvery chapel, and the personal request form from there as well. Along with the March elementary school calendar from 2012 with a scripture verse on it, and the Our Daily Bread ministry book. 6. How much disposable income does this sample suggest, and how would you characterize their class standing? What sorts of businesses do they frequent? According to Glassdoor, the average salary for a teacher at Calvary Chapel Christian school is around $50,000. And according to ZipRecruiter, the average salary of a law enforcement job is somewhere between $50-70 thousand. That being said, they are most likely middle to upper class. This can be supported by the things in their trash such as the dry wall and the $400 Maund industries general contractor bill that suggests they have enough money to spend on some type of renovation. All of their extra activities such as parachuting, movies, hunting, and the football game pass would not be possible for a household in poverty. They also had enough money to spend $306 at Truck and Stuff on cosmetics on a vehicle, which is not considered extremely necessary along with the Rural Mountain stonework for houses magizine. On the other hand, they do buy store brand items such as great value all-purpose flour and mozzarella cheese, and giant eagle brand eggs and cherry tomatoes, which could mean they are cautious of their money spent on food and might opt to buy the store brand over name brand in some things but not others. They also shop at retail stores such as Kohl’s and do their own nails at home shown by the nail polish and Twinkle Toes 9-piece pedicure set, which saves them money. 7. Much of your data comes from food consumption. How would you characterize their diet and lifestyle?
Overall, their diet seems to be fairly healthy, with a few exceptions. For example, they made their own pizza instead of buying one from a pizza shop. Also, from the trash we examined, the only evidence of them eating fast food or take out was subway and nothing else. Artifacts that support the idea of healthy eating include the giant eagle carton of eggs, the grape tomatoes, the ground coffee, the bag of granny smith apples, the chopped dates, the Gorilla plus multigrain rotini pasta, the pure canola cooking oil, the Thomas whole wheat English muffins, Southern grove dried Mediterranean apricots and pitted prunes, the 1% low fat milk from giant eagle, the Tipton apple juice, the seedless grapes, pistachios, the Dole spinach, the Delmont super sweet pineapple, the family pack of steaks, and the Nickels light wheat bread. The John Pempio gluten free pizza sauce, the great value mozzarella cheese, and the Pillsbury pizza crust support the theory that they made their own pizza rather than buying a premade one. The exceptions of healthy eating include the Keebler brand soft batch chocolate chip cookies, the Russel Stover chocolate covered cherries, the subway wrapper, the box of crackers, the Land of the Lakes butter, and the Orville microwave popcorn. To conclude, my team and I at WVU’s archeology division uncovered a lot of good material at the site. Our findings helped us gather that the household consisted of a middle to upper class family of 4, a mother, father, daughter and son, have relatively healthy eating habits and enjoy filling their time with a variety of activities. Overall, we found many sources of evidence to support our conclusions and consider our excavation to be successful. Artifact list Empty egg carton, giant eagle dozen, grade A
