ANTH 2140 Midterm Take Home Assignment Here is our midterm opportunity to check in with each other and engage the material that we’ve covered so far in class. Please submit your completed responses by Thursday October 19 th in the Assignment Dropbox in Moodle. Please submit your assignments as a PDF file. At the top of your assignment please write your full name. Point form responses are fine unless the wording of the question suggests otherwise by asking for your response in paragraph form. You do not need to answer the questions in order, but please number them in your document so that I know which question you are responding to. Please read the questions carefully and note the number of grades allocated for each question. This will tell you how much you need to say in each response (for example, 2 marks = say 2 things). Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any question or need clarification on anything. I look forward to reading your responses and engagement with the course so far. 1. Indigenous Studies: a. List two features / tenets of Indigenous Studies as an approach. (0.5 x 2 = 1 mark). b. In paragraph form, discuss two ways in which this approach (an Indigenous studies approach) may contribute to your primary field of study or future goals (such as NRS, Social Work, Education, Geography….). In other words, how might the approach taken in this course help inform 1
your future practice in your chosen fields? Please link each of your two responses to specific tenets of Indigenous Studies (2 marks). 2. Colonialism: a. What is colonialism? (1 mark) b. What is the underlying cultural assumption in the project of colonialism? (1 mark) c. In paragraph form discuss the difference between colonialism and settler colonialism and why it matters to understand this difference in the place most dominantly known as Canada. (2 marks) d. List three things about colonialism that struck you in the film Babaquaria . Please offer a specific example from the film to illustrate each of your three points. (3 marks) 3. Ways of Knowing: a. As cultural anthropologists, how do we conceptualize / understand / define “ways of knowing”? (1 marks) b. Why is it important to consider “ways of knowing” as part our Indigenous studies approach? (1 mark) c. Thinking back to the film Reel Injun , how does the concept of “ways of knowing” connect to our conversation about colonialism and settler colonialism, and the politics of representation therein. You are being asked here to elaborate on your response to the question “what is colonialism” through your response to “how do we define ways of knowing” using two specific examples from the film to illustrate your points. This question is asking you to link our conversation about settler colonialism and our conversation about land and place. (2 mark) c. Please share two things that stood out for you when you watched Angry Inuk as they relate to other things that we have talked about so far in the course.
