ANTH 100 Reading Response 4 The article WHITE PRIVILEGE: UNPACKING THE INVISIBLE KNAPSACK (1989) , by Peggy McIntosh, explains that from a very young age, everyone is taught to look at racism and oppression on an individual level. McIntosh starts describing oppression by telling us how women are at a disadvantage when it comes to men. The male population will always think that they are better than women in some way or another. This is connected to race as well because humans are always in competition with one another and some think that they are better than others due to ethnicity. McIntosh explains white privilege using the idea of an invisible weightless knapsack. She says, a white person in the United States has an invisible weightless knapsack that allows for acceptance, favors from the law, and common discrimination. This is truly an issue that should be addressed. The most common yet important thing as being accepted in the society is also a privilege. For example, McIntosh says, Some, like the expectation that neighbors will be decent to you, or that your race will not count against you in court, should be the norm in a just society (McIntosh 1934-present Page 4). Towards the end of the article, McIntosh raises the question of what people who are already in a dominant position would do to prevail equality and equity. The part where McIntosh says, Disapproving of the systems won t be enough to change them (McIntosh 1934-present Page 4), is the most intriguing to me. Even I think that disapproving and/or ignoring the problem won t be enough anymore. Doing something about these problems and bringing inequality and racism to an end is the only possible solution. The article, "A Politics of Uncertainty: Good White People, Emotions & Political Responsibility" by Lisa Slater explores the concept of uncertainty in politics, particularly among white individuals who consider themselves "good" and progressive. In the article, Slater examines how emotions and the need for certainty can affect political engagement, particularly in relation to issues of race and social inequality. The author argues that individuals who identify as "good white people" (page 4) may struggle with navigating the complexities of political responsibility and may avoid engaging in discussions that challenge their understanding of privilege and power. Slater highlights the importance of embracing and working through uncertainty to foster meaningful political change (Page 7). By acknowledging the complexities of identity and power dynamics, individuals can overcome their discomfort and engage in actions that challenge systemic racism and inequality. Overall, "A Politics of Uncertainty: Good White People, Emotions & Political Responsibility" encouraged me to critically examine my own biases and emotional responses to political discussions to move towards more inclusive and responsible political engagement.
