Anthropology 100 In the article, “What Is Settler Colonialism? (for Leo Delano Ames Jr.)”, by Maya Mikdashi, she talks about how settler colonialism is ongoing and might be never-ending. According to me, the author is saying many things about settler colonialism like how its somehow liberating but at the same time it also leads to uncertainty. Maya is proving a lot of points of her article like how North Americans were not exactly given their own land which they could own and how it was very difficult to keep the land under their own name. she says, “According to the treaty, federal government retains ultimate ownership over the land, which has been “leased” to Native Americans and their heirs ‘forever.’” (Page 24). She also explains how difficult it was for indigenous people to deal with their identity. She tells the story of her grandfather and how he was scared to accept that he was North American. Her grandfather called himself “White” and refused to tell his family about their history. He was afraid of how he would get disrespected and treated inhumanely if he opens up. This article reminded me of another one which is also about settler colonialism by Patrick Wolfe. He also explains how settler colonialism made lives of people difficult and uncertain. He too, like Maya, talks about genocide and how the elimination of the native people took place. Maya Mikdashi talks about a lot of people and how their lives were similar and yet so different from her and her family. She compares Palestinians, Ojibwe and North Americans, and draws out similarities and differences. The thing that intrigued me the most about this article was how her great-grandmother was pulled away from her family to be taught about ethics and how to “act white’. I believe this was and always will be, among other things, the most ridiculous thing that indigenous people had to go through. Reading about this made me wonder how many people had to go through this and how many people lost their families because of this. This also reminded me of the book that I once read, “Indian Horse” by Richard Wagamese. In this book Richard tells a story about a boy called Saul and how his whole family either died or had to run away because of “the school” that was led by Americans to strip indigenous people off their ways, behaviour and even their language.
