ANSC 311 Breed Characterization Report Common name of Species: Horse Picture: Breed: Canadian Origin: Quebec,Canada Coloration(s) and/or Distinguishing Physical features: Commonly black, can also be dark brown, bay or chestnut. Have finely chiseled heads, well muscled, high-set arched necks on long sloping shoulders, and thick ling, wavy manes and tails. Long sturdy legs, short cannon bones, and tough hooves. Distinguishing Performance traits: Not prone to colic of founder (easy keepers). Energetic without being nervous, not easily spooked. They are versatile and adaptable. Known for their kind,sensible, sociale nature. They are also smart and willing to please. Mares are quite fertile and can regularly reproduce until ageb20 or older. Age at Puberty About 18 months Number offspring born alive/weaned 1 foal/parity Conception rate Could not find specific number, however horses in general are around 65-70%. Birth Weight About 10% of mare’s weight (100 lb foal from 1000 lb mare) Mature Weight Males/Females 1000-1350 lbs Weaning/Yearling/Pubertal Weight Horses in general are 370-550 lbs at weaning Mature Height Males/Females 14-16 hands (56-64”) Post Weaning Growth/Egg/Milk Production n/a Primary use to mankind for companion/exotic animals or role in mating system (paternal, maternal, dual) for food animals: Riding, eventing, pulling wagons/ farm work, racing, and transportation.
