ANTH 270 Discussion 5 In Derald Wing Sue’s essay titled “The Invisible Whiteness of Being,” the author defines individual racism, cultural racism, and institutional racism. Individual racism is “any attitude or action whether intentional or unintentional, conscious or unconscious, overt or covert that subordinates a person or group because of phenotypical traits most strongly manifested in skin color.” (Page 20) An example of individual racism is saying racial slurs to a member of a different race. Cultural racism is the belief that a cultural group is superior to another. An example of cultural racism is when an Arab woman is wearing a Hijab and other races are staring at her due to the cultural object she is covering herself with. Institutional racism is defined as “any institutional policy, practice, and structure in governments, businesses, unions, schools, places of worship, courts, and law enforcement agencies that unfairly subordinate persons of color while allowing Whites to profit from such actions.” (Page 23) An example of institutional racism that I have witnessed is African Americans being charged with the exact same charge, but whites are let out on probation, but blacks are sent to prison for years. The institution that is involved is the Court system. The black man was the one hurt due to heinous punishment put in place. The white man and the court system both benefitted. The white man by not having to serve time for the crime and getting released on probation. The court system benefits by getting a conviction and sentencing someone to prison. I have seen this occur so much. Rothenberg, P. S. (2015). White Privilege (5th ed.). Macmillan Higher Education. https://ccis.vitalsource.com/books/9781319046200
