“Backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses. Once the learning goals, or desired results, have been identified, instructors will have an easier time developing assessments and instruction around grounded learning outcomes” (Bowen, 2017). Backward design is beneficial to teachers because it encourages them to be intentional during the design process. The goal is to establish the purpose of doing something before implementing it into their lesson. With traditional lesson planning, teachers often do not receive confirmation of learning outcomes and don’t have evidence as to whether the content was mastered (Aviles & Grayson, 2017). If the learning activities don’t align with the assessments, students often perform poorly on the test. Backward design allows teachers to plan based on their identified desired results. When creating assessments, teachers need to ensure they are minimizing bias by incorporating different types of assessment methods. This will allow students to show their understanding in various ways. Creating detailed rubrics can also reduce assessment bias. As teachers analyze their assessments, they should look for cultural bias, language bias, content bias, and access bias. The goal is for the assessment to be fair for all students, regardless of background ( Assessment and Bias | Feedback & Grading | Teaching Guides | Teaching Commons | DePaul University, Chicago , n.d.).
