HW 1 Review Questions 1.11 Manufacturing processes are usually accomplished as unit operations. Define unit operation. Unit operation is one step in the order of steps necessary to change a starting material into a final part or product. 1.12 In manufacturing processes, what is the difference between a processing operation and an assembly operation? A processing operation is transforming a work material from one state to a state closer to the final product by changing the geometry or its properties whereas an assembly operation is a joining of two or more parts to make something completely new. 1.16 What is a machining operation? A machining operation is a material removal process that removes excess material from the initial workpiece resulting in a shape with the desired geometry. 1.26 Name and define the two categories of overhead costs in a manufacturing company. The two categories of overhead costs in a manufacturing company are factory overhead and corporate overhead. Factory overhead is comprised of the costs in running a factory. This does not include the cost of materials, direct labor, and equipment. However, it does include plant supervision, maintenance, insurance, heat and light, etc. Corporate overhead comprises of company expenses that are not related to the factory. This includes sales, marketing, accounting, legal, engineering, research and development, office space, utilities, and health benefits. It does not affect the cost of manufacturing, but it must be accounted for in the price of the product when selling on the market. 21.5 In which category is taper turning classified, generating or forming? Taper turning is classified as generating. 21.10 In a straight turning operation, the final diameter of the workpiece is equal to the starting diameter minus the depth of cut, true or false? False 21.23 What is the difference between a fixture and a jig? A jig has a means to guide the tool during the operation whereas a fixture does not have a tool- guidance feature. 21.28 What is the chip load in a milling operation?
In a milling operation, the chip load is the feed, f, usually given as the feed per cutter tooth. It represents the size of the chip formed by each cutting edge. 2.8 Define the difference between elastic and plastic deformation in terms of the effect on the crystal lattice structure. The distinguishing feature between elastic and plastic deformation is that elastic deformation is a response to a gradually increasing mechanical stress that does not change the position of the atoms in the lattice. This allows the lattice structure to return to its original shape after the load is removed. Plastic deformation is when the stress reaches a higher value than the electrostatic forces holding atoms together. This results in a permanent change in shape because the lattice structure experiences slip (the atoms move in opposite directions) causing the bonds to be broken and reformed. 3.6 What is work hardening? Work hardening, or strain hardening, is when the metal becomes stronger as strain increases. 3.21 What is the defining characteristic of a Newtonian fluid? The defining characteristic of a Newtonian fluid is that its viscosity is a constant property of the fluid at a given temperature. 4.5 For a metal alloy, which temperature is higher than the other, liquidus or solidus? The liquidus has a higher temperature. 4.7 Define volumetric specific heat as a material property. Volumetric specific heat is the heat energy required to raise the temperature of a unit volume of material by 1°, J/mm3- °C (Btu/in3- °F). 4.20 Name two examples of industrial processes that are based on electrolysis. Two examples of industrial processes that are based on electrolysis are electroplating and electrochemical machining.
