2-1 Discussion: Documentation Technique
Some individuals argue that accountants should focus on producing financial statements and leave the design and production of managerial reports to information systems specialists. What are the advantages and disadvantages of following this advice?
Advantages:
●
Systems specialists can design programs to create interesting reports before they are even
needed.
●
They can manipulate data based on queries to provide information needed to deal with problems in real time.
●
They can design programs to capture non-financial data.
Disadvantages:
●
Systems specialists are not the principal user of the system, accountants are, therefore they would not be in a position to determine what data would constitute a meaningful report required by management.
●
Systems specialists do not have a thorough grasp of GAAP, GAAS, government and tax regulations.
●
They cannot call attention to unusual conditions or trends and employ their skills to interpret and help management strategize.
●
Widening of the communication gap between accountants and system specialists over capturing data that may or may not be useful (Hybrid Accountant, n.d.). Accountants should be involved in producing reports that include more than just financial measures of performance because this would help them identify other drivers or values that are not necessarily captured in the financial statement. Non-financial data that accountants must contend with today include social impact, environmental footprint, and innovation to name just a few. These should be integrated into the financial analysis for better strategic planning and decision making (Romney et al, 2021). References
